Welcome Screen Slow after 2004 Update

I recently installed the May Update (2004). I have 2 users defined to Windows 10 Home. Prior to 2004, my welcome screen would appear (date and time) and after hitting "enter", the 2 user logins would show. Since 2004, the Welcome screen appears but when you hit "enter" it takes upwards of 30 seconds before the user logins are displayed. I did also recently upgrade my video card to Nvidia pascal (GT 1030) because 2004 wouldn't work with the drivers of my older card. Is there a reason it's so slow. It is also excruciatingly slow to display the home screen after logging on. Is there something I could do to speed this up? Have extra processes been added to startup to cause this?

Hello,

Suggest you to run System File Checker scan:

  1. Search for 'command prompt' using Cortana or Windows Search.

  2. From results, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.

  3. Type sfc /scannow command and press Enter key.

  4. Let the command complete and then reboot the machine.

If issue still persists, perform clean boot:

Let us know if this helps!

Hi,

Please first try to install the latest update to see if the issue could be resolved.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4565503

If not, we can run below command in command prompt to check if it can find and solve any system file issue.

  1. Open "Command Prompt" as administrator

  2. Type "sfc /scannow"

  3. After the command completed, type "dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth"

  4. After that, type "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth"

If above steps still could not resolve the problem, please proceed clean boot.

Hi ElevenYu-MSFT

I tried to install 4565503 but it said it does not apply to this computer. I used the standalone install (9252) which I believe is the latest version of 2004 as I downloaded it on July 26th. Windows Update doesn't find any updates for it.

SFC/Scannow - no integrity problems
DISM...ScanHealth - no component store corruption detected
DISM...RestoreHealth - operation completed successfully

Have not got to clean boot yet because of a another strange thing happening.

I went to the website HOWTOFIXWINDOWS.COM that you gave a link to and it displayed for a couple of seconds then the screen (inside the browser window) went blank. It did the same using IE, Firefox and Edge. I have an Android tablet and it accesses the website fine using Vivaldi and Firefox. At this point I thought that it could be my video card (Nvidia Geforce GT 1030) as it was new (got because of driver issues for 2004). I uninstalled/reinstalled the latest driver but nothing changed. Even after I had rebooted while the driver was uninstalled, the same things occurred with the website and the welcome screen. I thought that I would let someone know about this before I get into the clean boot protocol (need my tablet to get the protocol).

I did a scans using Malwarebytes and Kaspersky and they found nothing. Maybe Kaspersky has a problem with 2004?

I still have a while to undo the upgrade but I may do it just to see if the problems go away.

Hi,

  1. Please run "winver" in Command Prompt and capture a screenshot of your Windows version information.

  2. And run "get-hotfix" in PowerShell and capture a screenshot of the installed hot fix list.

  3. Also, kindly check if you are installing the latest driver from below link. If not, you could have a try to see if it helps.

Sorry ElevenYu, I rolled back to the previous version of Windows. Windows Update shows me that my only available update is 2004.

I mentioned that I had installed a new graphics card (Nvidia Geforce GT 1030) specifically because MS said that you needed a certain driver revision otherwise there could be problems. I had installed this card a few days before the 2004 upgrade (which I did as a standalone update) so I wanted to make sure things worked properly (was it the card or 2004?). The website that I mentioned in the previous post (Howto fixwindows.com) now works properly. Because it wasn't displaying properly I was thinking that the new graphics card/driver was a problem and I have now determined that it is not the problem. I may not upgrade to 2004 for a while like most experts are suggesting. Ticked me off because it was the only reason that I purchased the new card. FYI, the Nvidia graphics driver is the most current for this card (451.67). MS says it has to be higher than 352 for 2004 and my previous card/s driver (GTS 240) wasn't going to be updated that high (according to Nvidia).

Hi,

In this case, we suggest that you could first not update the windows to 2004 and upgrade after more KB are released to fix some issues.

Best regards,
Eleven

May be "Windows Hello" making this issue. For me, After 2004 update same problem happened me. Turn off in "Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft account". Fast sign-in achived.
