Hello,

I’m currently in the middle of setting up our first WSUS server on ‘Windows 2012 R2’.

Windows 10

Classifications (Selected)

Critical Updates
Definition Updates
Security Updates

The initial synchronization produced a list of 779 unapproved updates covering a number of ‘Windows 10’ versions (1511 to 1809).

(NOTE: We've started with a deployment of ‘Windows 10 Version 1809’ in our organization.)

Is there anything I can do to significantly streamline this initial list of 779 updates?

For example, can I first of all decline any update which doesn’t specifically mention ‘Windows 10 Version 1809’ somewhere in its title?

What is the best way to treat superseded updates for a specific version of ‘Windows 10’ (e.g. 1809)?

Kind regards,

Glen

    Hi Glen,

I would recommend manually declining the superseded updates, this is something that you can do from time to time anyways, this also ensures that your WSUS infrastructure is clean and don't contain any unnecessary updates which may also take up a lot of disk space.

You'll find some information in the link below:
How to identify and decline superseded updates in WSUS

    Best regards,
    Leon

Thank you Leon for the useful article about supersedence.

As we are a ‘Windows 10 Version 1809’ environment only ...

Can I start by declining ALL listed updates that reference previous versions of ‘Windows 10’ in their title (i.e. 1607, 1703, 1709 etc.)?

    Kind regards.

    Hi GlenV-4078,

    Thanks for posting on Q&A.

Please refer to the following link to decline the superseded updates:

In addition, we could create an Update View to filter out the specified updates. Please refer the following picture to create an Update View:

You should review my 8 part blog series on How to Setup, Manage, and Maintain WSUS. It will help you learn how to manage and maintain WSUS such that it takes the least amount of YOUR time, and accomplishes everything in a controlled manor.
