remove checkpoints/snapshots witount data merge (NO MERGE)

Hello, I have a question about Hyper-v snapshot removing.
I have an old VM that I want to remove, it has 2 checkpoints which I don't want to merge before removing. I don't have a space on the drive C: for merge. If there is a possibility to remove VM and checkpoints without data merge?

Hi @MihailsSvetlovs-5498,

As far as I know you cannot stop the merge process as Hyper-V will automatically start merging once you delete a checkpoint.

If possible, free up storage space on the volume where the .VHDX file is located, if you cannot free up space on your current C-drive, you can use Storage Migration to move the storage to a location with more space while the virtual machine is still running.

As I don't need any data from this VM, I need just to remove it. Is there a possibility to remove it without merge? It is useless to buy an external HDD to lose the time to move the VM if in the end I will remove it.

As I said, I don't think you can skip the merge, Hyper-V will try to merge no matter what you do.

Hello MihailsSvetlovs,

You can't stop the merging process of the 2 checkpoints as the Hyper V will automatically execute it once you delete the checkpoints. As an alternative, you can try freeing up space where the .VHDX file located, as this might help you out better.

But if you are unable to free up the space from the respected drive then try the below link to use Storage Migration
using Virtual Machine Storage Migration Overview,

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2012-R2-and-2012/hh831656(v=ws.11)

Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 introduces support for moving virtual machine storage without downtime by making it possible to move the storage while the virtual machine remains running. You can perform this task by using a new wizard in Hyper-V Manager or by using new Hyper-V cmdlets for Windows PowerShell.

You can add storage to either a stand-alone computer or to a Hyper-V cluster, and then move virtual machines to the new storage while the virtual machines continue to run.

Hope this answers all your queries, if not please do repost back.
