shared storage best practices hyper v cluster

so the MSA is stable , i removed the ADDS from both nodes and i am preparing to move my VMs this weekend

my last question : what are the best practices for the shared storage ?

  1. should i create only 1 volume ( LUN ) and use it for configs and data ( with 2 different folders inside )

  2. should i create a volume for quorum ?

  3. should i initialize and format the LUN in windows disk manager ?

Also how can i move the current VMs from local storage to the shared storage ?

thank you

Hello @tarekH-3457

Creating more than 1 volume won't affect the inside folders but it is ideal enough to create a single volume (LUN)

Creating a volume for quorum totally depends on your need and requirement, do follow the below link to get to know more about quorum,

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/failover-clustering/manage-cluster-quorum

In order to move the current VMs from local storage to the shared storage, use the below link

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2012-r2-and-2012/hh831435(v=ws.11)

1- so 1 lun is enough for the 2 nodes correct ?
2- i did not understand the quorum
3- last link ( migration) doesnt open ( 404 )

If i create one Lun for each node won't i lose half the storage space fir nothing? The second node has nothing..shouldnt both share the same lun

Hey,

Just to add you can do a storage migration from local storage to shared storage. The following article should jelp:
https://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/133072-convert-from-non-clusterd-hyper-v-vm-to-clustered

With 2 nodes, it is recommended to have witness configured. Without witness there is 50/50 cluster will survive the loss of one node. Check for more information:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-spaces/understand-quorum

The following guide will help with the configuration:
