Azure Backup Server

Hello all,

I've been studying the Azure Backup Server solution to backup my on-premises virtual machines. I've a question regarding the solution:

When we configure the backup solution with MABS (Microsoft Azure Backup Server) is it possible to backup the data and store it only on the cloud and not in on-premises?

Thanks in advance,
Daniel Nascimento

Hi @DanielNascimento-5742,

The Online Protection option is only available if you select the short-term protection (disk) option, as shown here:

But if you host your Microsoft Azure Backup Server (MABS) in the cloud (Azure) and use Azure disk storage, then you will have also the short-term protections in the cloud.

However please note the following:

  • To protect on-premises workloads, the MABS server must be located on-premises, and connected to a domain.

  • To protect workloads running on Azure VMs, the MABS server must be located in Azure, running as an Azure VM, and connected to a domain.

Best regards,

Thanks!!

I Think I understood the key points of deploying this kind of solution, but after that i can configure a retention plan and delete it on prem but keep it on the cloud right? Would that cause any trouble?

Yes, you can always keep the long-term backups in the cloud.
