Error 0x0000011b - No Workgroup Printer access - it worked yesterday!

My PC is connected via a Workgroup to my wife's PC - her PC is wired to our printer.

When I send a document for printing - it appears on the printer queue on my PC but the Status is blank - then after about a minute it disappears from my printer queue - but nothing prints.

Looking at our Network, I can see the printer but cannot Connect to Printer - Operation failed with error 0x0000011b

In the mean time, on my PC, I have deleted the link to our printer and now cannot re-install, as the wizard cannot locate the printer via the network.

Recent Windows Updates Installed

12-09-2021 - KB2310138 (Version 1.349.599.0)
14-09-2021 - KB2310138 (Version 1.349.704.0)
15-09-2021 - KB2310138 (Version 1.349.766.0)
15-09-2021 - KB890830 (v5.93)

Any simple work around or an update from Microsoft - would us minions receive an indication of a Microsoft correction or would we learn by osmosis?

Ideas Please

I uninstalled KB5005565 but now I'm getting error 0x000003e3 trying to re-add the printer. I should have not removed it and it probably would have worked. I'm hoping a patch comes out on Tuesday, but ultimately I think I'm going to install a StarTech Parallel Ethernet Network Print Server on this Epson LX-350 because I don't trust that Microsoft will get this right.

SUCCESS without removing the server update...

Update your workstation to 21H1 and then the updates sync and network printing will work fine after that.

I have even installed 21H2 on both my PC. All available and optional updates are installed. Still no success :(

Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print", add DWORD RpcAuthnLevelPrivacyEnabled = 0. Restart the Print Spooler, and you should be able to print.

When the Registry DWORD is set to RpcAuthnLevelPrivacyEnabled=1, Windows encrypts RPC communication with network printers and/or print servers. Performing the above is much faster than uninstalling the KB that was applied.

This has haunted us for 6 days.

This was causing us serious headache. This resolved our issue. FYI for others for us I only had to make changes the reg changes on the Print Server, on the client side the reg changes didn't make a difference. Client printing worked back to normal once the server reg changes were made to "0" and restarted Print Spooler Service.

Print Server = Windows Server 2012 R2
Client = Windows 7 Pro

(we have only seen this with Windows 7, not Windows 10)

Thank you for this solution. I just wanted to be sure. it needs to value = 0. not 1 right?
edit: and do I still need to uninstall KB5005565?

Thanks, looks to have sorted the issue

Thank you, worked for me too.

Fixed the issue for me. Domain joined computers with Print servers were W10 with KB5005565 applied. Clients were W7Pro. Adding DWORD reg value RpcAuthnLevelPrivacyEnabled=0 as described and restarting the print spooler fixed the issue immediately.

Thanks so much for posting this.

Thank you, this registry key restored printer install and the spooler for existing connections. I was then able to 'Add a printer' on a Windows 7 client, also in a common workgroup.
The printer is attached to a Windows 10 Home machine, acts as the server for the Shared print device. I added this registry key ONLY to the windows 10 host.
Other Windows 10 and Windows 7 machines inside the private LAN attaching to the shared printer/scanner did not require the registry change.

No removal/change of Windows update was required on any Windows machine on the LAN.

If you do this, you will be highly vulnerable to attacks.

I just wanted to say thank you.

This is the solution and should be the top comment. I couldnt delete KB5005565 update, but this RegEdit did the trick!

@BBaker32 has the solution on this one to keep the patch but change the behavior back to September 13th

further details are in the MS article explaining the protocol setting.

most people will have issues with the kb5005565 update reinstalling or having problems hiding it. you can keep the update installed.

so goto a command prompt (without admin, to your home directory)

type

notepad kb5005565fix.reg

copy the part between the --

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print]
"RpcAuthnLevelPrivacyEnabled"=dword:00000000

save and open to insert into the registry, REBOOT PC

thanks

Just to add another note which I ran across today. Client has having same issue and getting error installing any printer from their print server. I reviewed all updates on the workstation and noticed updates were old and nothing recent. I then found out the client was running version 1703 which I am sure is causing issues in installing printers on patched print server. Client is going to update the current version to 21H1 and let me know the outcome.

Those who print to a USB printer connected to another computer are probably the key decision makers when it comes to buying the next operating system. Agree?

Time flies when you're having fun. We successfully remedied the issue by uninstalling KB5006672
