The first question which upgrade type do you plan: In-place upgrade on the same machine or side-by-side migration to a different machine?

Hi balanarasimhac-1495,
You can use Data Migration Assistant to help you migrate to SQL Server 2012 by detecting compatibility issues that can impact database functionality. DMA recommends performance and reliability improvements for your target environment and allows you to move your schema, data, and uncontained objects from your source server to your target server.

Please refer to the tutorials which might be helpful:
Upgrade SQL Server using the Data Migration Assistant

Please make sure to back up all SQL Server database files from the instance before migration.

Best Regards,
Amelia
