SQL Server 2019 Setup Error: 0x80004005

I am trying to install a custom instance of SQL Server 2019 Setup. I've done everything I can to uninstall and reinstall the SQL server files, but every attempt has the same result. I'm on Windows 10 and I've had the custom installation work before on this computer, but there was an issue and I needed to redo the instance.

I cannot seem to attach a file here, so here is the paste of my summary log file. I've looked at probably 10 different questions on this forum about people with these errors and none of what was mentioned seemed to work for me.

In the same folder as you found summary.txt, there is also detail.txt. It may shed more light on what is going on, so take a look at it. But beware that it is very verbose. You can also upload it here as an attachment.

Here is the Detail page with the Summary. I tried taking a look at it before, but I wasn't experienced enough to use the information on it to help.

That is only the detail file for the landing page, which relates to the Setup wizard itself. There does not seem to be any errors in this one.

The file that is more interesting is called details.txt only. In the same folder there should be quite a few more files. Look around in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\150\Setup Bootstrap\Log. There is one folder per installation attempt, or rather one per phase in the installation.

Hi @Altarian,

See this link: https://bobcares.com/blog/an-error-occurred-for-a-dependency-of-the-feature-causing-the-setup-process-for-the-feature-to-fail/
It carefully describes all the steps of the solution in detail.
Here is Release notes for SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).
SSMS 18.9.2 is the latest general availability (GA) release of SSMS.

Best regards,
Seeya

Unfortunately none of the steps in that link changed the outcome.

I'm jumping to an Answer, because the comment level is getting too deep.

So it is the SQL Server service that does not start. I was afraid that it was something else, because that usually results in a different error message.

Is there a file C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL15.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\LOG\ERRORLOG? That file may have the reason why SQL Server does not start.

By the way, are you running any particular anti-malware software or just plain Windows Defender?

Unfortunately there are no error files in that file location. I am also not running anything but windows defender and I have tried with firewall off and on.

I'm not entirely surprised, but I wanted to start there.

Open a command prompt with "Run as administrator", and change the folder to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL15.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\Binn. Then run this:

sqlservr -sSQLEXPRESS

Attach a screenshot of what happens.

Unfortunately, there was an error in my post above, that I have corrected. I forgot to edit the command I used to test, so it include my instance name.

So when you started SQL Server this way, it started. Then things went south, because we should probably have supplied the special arguments needed for Setup.

This suggest that the Service Manager is not able to start SQL Server for some reason, and I guess that is a WMI problem. Which is Windows and not SQL Server and way outside my comfort zone.

It's possible we could SQL Server to run, it we start SQL Server a number of time, with the same arguments as Setup uses. But I would have to figure this out by reading errorlogs from a fresh install, which I don't have in store. And in the end, you would probably still have problems with starting SQL Server as a service.

So I think you better try to uninstall the lot. Then you can see if you can load SQL Server localdb and only install that one. This is a lighter edition of SQL Server which runs in user space. It does not have all feature, but if you only want to play with T-SQL, it may be good enough.

Sounds good. I'll try out the SQL Server localdb and see if I can get at least that to work.
