Word does not Print page range, only full document 2021

Hi, I have Office 365 2021 Emprersarial, more than a week ago I have problems with printing some documents from My PC, it happens that if I send the entire document to print, it prints perfectly, but if I send a range of pages to print or a specific page of that same document as it does not print or get stuck in the print queue, it is as if it were not sent to print.
Other word files print perfectly by ranges and complete but only some word documents are those that give this problem, I also print by ranges from PDF or Excel etc without difficulty, the most worrying thing is that more and more word documents with this problem appear to me and they are files created previously and that did not present this difficulty, it is also happening to other co-workers with this same office 365,

I appreciate in advance any kind of help or guidance. Thanks!!

Up to 10 attachments (including images) can be used with a maximum of 3.0 MiB each and 30.0 MiB total.

My MSWord 16 also randomly refuses to print at all if I'm asking for a page range instead of the entire document. The entire document Does print. It isn't the printer, as the printer is working fine. Also, if I export the file to a PDF, the PDF will print page ranges.

This error has just recently begun.

Page numbers are the ones generated by Word.

No error messages have popped up. And the PC's printer status popup doesn't show any pending files.

Which version and build of Word/Office are you running?

I have been doing a mail merge. Print to PDF works if I start with page 1, but if I start printing with page number >1 the resulting PDF can't be opened. The update fields hack below doesn't work in this case.

I encountered this problem today and it is super-frustrating. I created at 26 page mail-merge document, printed it, but ran out of printer ink halfway through (printer continued printing half-inked pages which I cannot use).

i'm now trying to print the 2nd half of the letters, but even checking both "update fields before printing" and "updated linked data before printing" does not work.

I copied one page out of the document into a new document; it prints fine. I guess the new workaround will be to copy all 13 pages into a new document and then print THAT whole document.

Grumble.

Hi @ReinierArbelo-5992,
Welcome to Q&A forum!

Are there any error messages when this issue occured? If so, please describe it in detail or share a screenshot with us.

it is also happening to other co-workers with this same office 365

< Are you using the same printer? Are the problematic Word documents the same?

Consider that only some Word files have this issue. Please confirm the following information with us and try the troubleshooting steps:

1. First of all, it is recommended that you check whether the page number settings in the document are correct.
This issue occurs if the page number does not match the number of pages for custom printing. It is recommended to generate consecutive page numbers.
2. What is the format of the file? Please save it in another format (such as .xls) to check.
3. Where do you save these files? Please save it locally and change the path.
4. Copy the file in question to another computer and try to print.

In addition, from the perspective of the printer, I suggest:

1. Disconnect and reconnect the printer.
2. Update the printer driver and restart the printer.
3. If conditions permit, please try to change a printer to check this issue.

If the above do not work, please try to repair Office.
Any updates, please let me know.

Hello, I appreciate your response.
The problem is in the word .docx document, it is only 4 pages, it has no sections and it is numbered consecutively, it is not a printer problem, since I send the whole document and it prints it completely, the problem is to send only one page to print, it happens to me in several printers that I have added, I already tried from another pc with the same file and the problem persists, even if the printing is done to PDF it acts in the same way, that is, the document if you print everything if you succeed but if you decide to print a page or range it does not do it,
Other .docx documents within my PC print correctly either by range or complete, it only happens with some documents and more and more are appearing with this problem, Thank you

Hi @ReinierArbelo-5992,
Thanks for your reply and sharing.
Please go to File>Options>Display in Word to check "Update fields before printing" option to check again.

If the above does also not work, please confirm the following information with us.

  • Do these documents have any similarities? For example, whether the storage path and file format are the same, are pictures inserted in the document?

  • Are they created by you yourself?

I also suggest you try to import the contents of the document into a new blank file for a check:
Create a new document, go to Insert tab>Object>Text from File>browse to the storage path of the problem document and select it>click Insert.

Any questions and updates, please feel free to post back.

Hello, I am very grateful, your first recommendation worked for me, "Update fields before printing", I already did the test and it worked for me, I don't know why some documents did allow printing by range and others not, but the important thing is that I already have the solution for which I thank you very much for your time and explanation, have a good day,

Thanks, I don't know what 'update fields' actually does, but the mysterious bug is now squashed.

Hmm, maybe the bug is back. I created a simple test document and added an Odd Page section break to create a second section. Printing section 2 prints the blank filler page (= page 2) and the page in the new section (= page 3), so something is going on.

EDIT: Apparently, the specific issue mentioned in the paragraph above is an older bug. It is related to how Word treats "filler" pages that will be inserted, if required, to ensure that an odd page is always a right hand page (and, similarly, to ensure that an even page is always a left hand page). The bug is unlikely to be fixed.

Had the same issue. Solved it very easy - just rebuild the sequence number of pages. You can see used page numbers in left navigate panel. In my case pages were begging from 114 page and I can easily print needed page by entering its number (114 or 115 for example). Other suggested variants didn’t work for me. Thanks vikiji-msft for the wright way of troubleshooting.

To remember the syntax for printing page ranges, display the "Formatted Page Number" as well as the "Section" number by choosing those options from the context menu that displays when you right-click the status bar in Word.

I have two people experiencing this with the same word doc. I asked them to convert to PDF after the fix didn't work. It's not happening on all documents, just this one.

Could you give a specific example to reproduce the issue?

Also, note that saving as a PDF and printing the PDF should definitely work around any issue with printing a page range.

I'm also having this problem for the second time. Checking the "update fields before printing" worked the first time but this time it didn't. However, I checked the box below "update linked data before printing" and it worked. I hope this doesn't happen again since there are no more boxes to check underneath. :(

This is apparently a recent bug related to the presence of a TOC field in the document. It has also shown up on the consumer Microsoft Answers site and MVPs there stated that it is related to updating of very old code and may take a while to sort out.

Another workaround is to save/print as pdf and print from the pdf.

same problem with me, and indeed, the recommended action: set 'update fields' to 'on' did solve the problem.
still wondering why it occurred so suddenly, in the first place.
