Hyper-V Server and multiple Essentials VM licensing

I have a couple of questions.

1) Can you run a bare metal Hypervisor type 1 with two VM's both running W19 Essentials.

2) Would Q1 be OK if each instance was a separate paid license.

3) Can there be more than one Essentials server in a domain.

4) Are there any issues with licensing if the Essentials server is used for a web server.

Thanks

  1. (a) If the Hyper-V host server is Essentials, you could only install one instance of Essentials as a virtual machine on this server. And this host server can only run Hyper-V role with none of the other roles and features of the Essentials Experience installed.

(b)If the Hyper-V host server is not Essentials, yes you can install two VM running W19 Essentials.

  2. Yes, you need to purchase separate license for each instance.

  3. No, essential server should be root domain controller, each domain has only one root DC.

  4. There should be no licensing issue if the essentials server is used for a web server.

  1. Possibly, may depend somewhat on the hypervisor used. Also note essentials wants to be a root domain controller so I suppose you're asking about deploying on isolated networks.

  2. Possibly but legal licensing issues cannot be resolved by anonymous forums replies, contact the reseller's train licensing specialist or microsoft directly. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/licensing/existing-customer/activation-centers

  3. An essential server wants to be a root domain controller so in this respect no.

  4. See 2.)
