Migrating on premise AD server to Office 365

I wanted to know the possible methods for migrating our on-premise AD server to cloud. Currently we have a setup using AD connect to connect to Azure AD and all our users are already synced. But we are in need to retire the servers. So how can I do it in correct way? Can I backup the current AD server in .ovf file and create a VM in Azure? Will it work or what are the methods of doing it? I am really unsure of it.

Hi @NadeemMaharjan-9724 ,

as AD is providing a replication mechanism I would recommend:

  • Create a VPN connection between on-premises and Azure environment (if not already exists)

  • Create VMs in Azure

  • Install additional DCs on Azure VMs

  • Let the all AD DCs replicate

If replication is done

  • Move FSMO roles to Azure AD DC VMs

  • De-install on-premises AD DCs after verify all on-premises users are able to authenticate with the Azure DCs
