Hyper-V wont allow logging in with Microsoft Account

I ran into an odd issue with Hyper-V and i'm hoping someone may have some suggestions for me.

I work out of my home and run a 3 hyper-v machines for software testing on my host machine which is now Windows 11. I have had these 3 VM's for the past 2 years and I log into each of them using my Microsoft account without issue.

I have been running Windows 11 for the past few weeks on my host machine. I also updated all my VM's to use configuration version 10.0 that came with Windows 11 and have not run into any issues until yesterday.

Yesterday my Windows 11 host machine had 2 MS updates (KB5006674 and KB5005537) which installed just fine and I see nothing in them that would indicate its related.

After rebooting the host machine, I started up 3 of my VM's and ran into an interesting issue. I have always connected to the VM's by using the Connect option in the hyper-v console which starts up an enhanced session and I then log into my MS account.

However now when I start up my Windows 10 VM's and connect, if I have a local admin account setup on the VM, it displays that by default and not the MS Account, there is no way to switch accounts.

If I change from Enhanced mode to basic mode, then I get the standard login to use my MS account and can log in. After logging in, if I switched back to enhanced mode, it goes right back to presenting me with the local account I had created some time ago and will only let me log in with that account.

On my other 2 VM's which are both Windows 11, I do not have any local account so when those machines start up there is NO login screen at all and no way to log in.

Again, if I switch to a basic session, then I get my MS account option to log in with on all 3 VM's

If I use a RDP session and connect to any of the 3 VM's they present my MS account to log in with.

So, the issue is only being impacted when I use the Connect option through Hyper-V using an enhanced session. I can of course use RDP to get in, but I'm wondering if something has changed or this is a bug, hoping someone else has run into this. I have done several searches in various forums and nothing seems to come up matching this scenario.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi All,

    I have similar issue:

I have Windows 11 installed as guest on Hyper-V running on Windows 10. After connecting the user I've initially created to MS account the user is not shown on the enhanced session login page. In case I switch to standard session I see all users.
The user associated with MS account is member of the following groups: Users, Administrators, Remote Desktop Users.

I've created a new local user and it is shown boot on enhanced and on standard session login page.

As a workaround I am able to login with the MS account on standard session, then with local user on enhanced session, then I connect to MS account session using task manager (Users tab / left click on user with MS account / Connect).

The solution mentioned by @Lloyd Cox did not work for me.

This is still a problem (23H accessing 23H).

Lloyd's solution above doesn't stick, at least not any more.

It seems bizarre that a basic problem such as with logging in isn't 'improved' by now.

Furthermore with the degree to which we are being forced down the Microsoft live account route is seems bizarre that RDP authentication doesn't support some sort of a live login/SSO token.

I am trying to evaluate if day to day use of VMs and a second OS would be a a viable means of working, and so far its still dubious.
