Operation failed with error 0x0000007c, Installing Network Shared Printer.

Local Client unable to install Follow me printer. The client gets prompted "Do you trust this printer?", but once you select "Install Driver", I get a dialogue box "Windows cannot connect to the printer, operation failed with error 0x0000007c".

Up to 10 attachments (including images) can be used with a maximum of 3.0 MiB each and 30.0 MiB total.

here are the solutions -

1- one solution is to uninstall a specific update but there would be another update installed after some time which is not a proper solution or you have to turn off the automatic updates which is also not a proper solution.

2- You don't need to uninstall any update - follow these steps and bingo
- step 1 - first of all go to C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3 and cut all the contents from inside of 3 folder to desktop
- step 2 - then go to run - services.msc - search the service by the name spooler and restart it
(now you won't be able to install the driver automatically for a shared printer and you will get the above error "0x0000007c")
- step 3 - go to control panel - programs & features and uninstall the printer first
- step 5 - now add the printer manually from - add a printer - local printer - then add the path (network path along with the printer name) have disc - search from the list or search your computer for inf file (driver) of the printer & bingo

This way you will be able to make it to work your shared Printer without uninstalling the recent update -

NOTE: The above path is for 64 bit windows - for 32 Bit follow - C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\W32X86\3 - & rest the same.

On the student laptops, there is no folder C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3.

I had same issue, one computer was unable to connect printer (locally shared from second computer), on the step when you need to install driver it said error "0x0000007c".
What I did:
deleted printer on 1st computer;
deleted driver;
and then downloaded driver from internet for that printer and installed it manually(only driver .inf file);
after that when I tried to find printer(with run command \\HOSTNAME) and tried to connect it all was successful, it does not ask for install printer driver anymore.
Hope it helps.

Microsoft released an optional update for this issue yesterday.

KB5007253

I never encountered this issue but I did install the update and can still print.

Sorry: KB5007253 doesn't seem to be related to print nightmare bug!?

Also , how to uninstall updates, if the updates are installed via intune ?

Having a similar issue with a HP LaserJet 1022 on a Windows 10 Home computer. The printer sharing was working fine and just stopped working. KB50006670 update is not installed. At first, the printer could not be seen and required at Network Reset. The printer can now be seen but 0x0000007c error still appears. There is not driver on the host computer to delete as it is built-in. going to HP support to download drivers directs you to use what is already on the Windows 10 computer.

I see where Regedit can be used to delete a BIDI value in the printer but where it is located does not exist for the LJ 1022.

What's the next thing to try?

Thanks

Hello, you have to delete driver not from host computer, you have to delete it from your computer(If it exists)... problem of error 0x0000007c is that you can't pass the step, where your computer tries to download and install the printer driver from host computer.. So, solution is that you manually install driver before adding shared printer and when you do that and then you add the printer you pass that problematic step and printer is connecting without issues.

Thanks. I installed the driver on the machine I was trying to connect from, then connected to the remote machine that has the printer attached and I was able to get the shared printer installed.

It seems that the newest automatic Windows updates fixes the problem in our company. For about two weeks, many users could not print. Our support department got a lot of complaints in those weeks, but we had no solution.
Many years ago, it was a prediction that 'a paper-less area will appear very soon'. It has not appeared.

Hello.
We have same Problem (0x0000007c) on one single Computer in our network and nothing of the mentioned workarounds help.
Other computers are not having problems.
The problem computer is Win10 21H1 with last November Update KB5007253.
The problem does not only appear for some special printer but for all printers provides from the print server, equal if Konica, HP, Sharp...
I'm close to blank this computer and install Win10 21H1 blank again, but would like to solve the problem and get to know the issue for further solutions.
Did anybody try all mentioned solutions and did not have succes, too?

Bytheway: When connection a shared printer manually via typing its IP address and selecting driver, there is no problem. Only when trying to connect the shared printers via \\PRINT-SERVER\ an double click.

Update: For us for this specific single computer it was helpful to uninstall the KB5007253. Hope MS provides a new Update next month which
substitutes this one and does not cause same problem.

@MicroSpidl-6633

Would you be willing to reapply the November optional update if Microsoft is interested in gathering logs for locations where the update has not worked?

Not a problem to remove the update after the spooler logs are obtained.

I do not know if MS needs logs. None of my contacts are around this week.

Thanks

Of course - I would be willing, applied and uninstalled a lot of updates on this computer the last days, there would be no big drama if I would do so one more time :)

But: In the meantime the error 0x0000007c apperas again on this computer:
- Yesterday I resolved the problem by finding out that as soon as the optional update KB5007253 was installed, the error appeared when trying to connect to a shared printer via UNC path of print server.
- Today - nothing changed on the computer since yesterday and optional update KB5007253 is not installed - the user called that he can not print and can not connect any other printer from print server. Same error.
--> Becaus this computer was the only one from many computers in the LAN we decided to provide the user an other working computer and do a clean Win10 21H1 install to this faulty computer to use it further. We did not format and reinstall already - if MS wants us to do some more research on THIS faulty computer, we could store it ofr some days. Just let me know.

Can anybody confirm this solution? Seems to be new? I have been trying to add the registry key according to this manual, but it did not work (I am running 21H1 BTW):

Registrierungsspeicherort

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Printers\PointAndPrint

DWord name

Can confirm this works. I had to add the registry entry manually though and restarted PC (Also running 21H1) and was finally able to get the network shared printers added.

yes man, this method solved my problem. thanks

This fix worked for me as well. But that registry entry overrides a Windows feature. When Microsoft eventually fixes this issue properly, should I remove this registry entry?

probably

Thank you for the suggestive solution.
with this method, I solved the "HP laserjet 1020 0X00000007c" error.
any other method is useless.I think that the HP 1020 is too old to install the driver by downloaded program. And all the dowdload one are producing error when you try to use client pc to connect with share printer of host pc.
the downloaded program only work for host pc which has a usb connect to printer, and client pc has no usb connected to hp 1020.

This worked perfectly for HP Laserjet 1022, many thanks

This worked like a charm for accessing a shared Brother laser printer on our private network! NONE of the other steps above would actually get the driver installed including running the whole printer installation package.

A quick note, if your printer isn't listed, click the have disk option and navigate to the driver files (.inf) for your printer wherever you have them saved. It will install them and then you can print!

This worked for me.

Run the installation program for the printer driver on the pc you are trying to connect to the printer. When the program directs you to connect the printer cable, attempt to connect to the remote printer. The driver files should still be available at that time. After the printer connects, just cancel the installation.

My work was delayed because of this problem. Pre-installing the printer driver, making registry settings or group policy settings didn't help. to fix the problem... i removed the october updates. I then disabled the updates for now. I installed the printers, they are working without updates. Dear microsoft, when you do fix updates, please test a few times before posting!

Did you remove the update from the machine you were trying to connect to the shared printer or the machine that was sharing the printer?

0 Votes 0 ·

I uninstalled the above-mentioned kb5006670 and later kb5006738 updates from both sides. The problem did not go away, I tried the recommended actions via group policy and regedit, and it still didn't work. As a solution, I removed the september and october updates from both computers. even the ones for net framework. Then I turned off the updates. for now my network printers are working.
