Installing Service Pack 3 for SQL Server 2014 on primary site server/secondary sites servers

Hi,

I have primary site server with its DB hosted on local SQL Server Standard 2014 SP2 and two secondary sites on servers with their DBs hosted on SQL Server Express 2014 SP2 respectively. I would like to install SP3 for SQL Server 2014 on all of them so do I have to stop CM services while doing so on primary site server and secondary sites servers and is order of installing SP3 important because SQL Server upgrade for instance must be done first on secondary sites servers and only then on primary site server if I am not mistaken.

Thank you very much in advance!!!

Hi @BojanZivkovic-7448

To upgrade SQL Server on the site database server, we should do these steps:

1.Stop all Configuration Manager services at the site

2.Upgrade SQL Server to a supported version

3.Restart the Configuration Manager services

Here is the article about SQL upgrading, please refer to it:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/configmgr/core/servers/manage/upgrade-on-premises-infrastructure#to-upgrade-sql-server-on-the-site-database-server

And there is no issue about the order, if we would like to upgrade secondary sites first, just operate it.

Hi, this is not actual upgrade of SQL Server 2014 but installation of SP3 - procedure is the same?

Yes, it is. If possible, we could backup the SQL to prevent data loss.

And finally what about patching SQL Servers with their updates (security updates, cumulative updates ...) - again same procedure? :-)

Hi,

The procedure could be finished once some updates are restarted, it is recommended to do these steps to prevent the operation fails.

Best regards,
