Unable to open Office documents on Edge

Hello,

We have an intranet site containing a hierarchy of documents. Using the browser Edge, clicking on the link to open an Office document (for example a Word document)

it opens a new tab with a URL starting with https://view.officeapps.live.com/op/view.aspx?src=

and it displays an error stating "Word ran into a problem opening this document in a browser"

It happens with any file on this Intranet, and with Word or Excel.

I tried to Repair Office -> same issue

I tried to reset the settings in Edge -> same issue

I removed all extensions in Edge -> same issue

I cleared the cache in Edge -> same issue

I reinstalled Edge -> same issue

Then I tried to test with another site containing Office documents, I found this one https://file-examples.com/index.php/sample-documents-download/sample-doc-download/#google_vignette and clicked on one of the buttons to download a sample file.

It opened a new tab: https://view.officeapps.live.com/op/view.aspx?src=https%3A%2F%2Ffile-examples-com.github.io%2Fuploads%2F2017%2F02%2Ffile-sample_100kB.docx&wdOrigin=BROWSELINK

and this document works for me to display it.

I wonder why it works for the site above but doesn't for my intranet site.

Could you help determine what is the root cause of this issue?

And is there a way to make it work?

If possible, can you provide more relevant details which will help solve this issue, such as the following:

Did your files contain any unsupported features for Word online?
Which file format did you use for these office document files?
Did this problem appear in all office document files?

First I suggest you refer to this support article and confirm if your files contain any unsupported features: Differences between using a document in the browser and in Word.

Hi,

Here are the answers to your questions:
1. The files I tested don't contain any unsupported features for Word online. I even just tried to create a new Word document that is completely blank and I get still the same issue.
2. The file format I use is Word Document .docx . I tested also with a file Excel .xlsx, I get the same issue
3. The problem is for all Office document files. No document file works

Hi @BoninCecile-4052,

Thank you for your response. If this is the case, the file format is correct. According to the 404 response code you mentioned, I think this should be the main cause of the problem. When an error occurs in the file routing mapping, the server will not be able to find the corresponding file, which will result in a 404 response error. So I think you should make sure that the server can find the office file correctly.

In addition, I want to know whether this problem will appear in other browsers, such as Chrome. Or you can also try Inprivate mode?

I know this might not be what you are looking for, but switching the "Open Office files in the browser" setting off in edge://settings/downloads will prevent your browser from trying to open your document in the browser. Your document will start downloading instead, so you won't get the error.
Offcourse, this doesn't answer your question how the document can be openened in Edge directly, but for the time beeing you can get rid of the error message.

We are also experiencing this error in Edge specifically. @XuDongPeng-MSFT is there more information about this issue?

Our analyzes show that when Edge sees that it is an office file (Word, Excel etc) it forwards it to: view.officeapps.live.com.

By looking at the logs on the web server, we see that the client makes a call to the file in question, which neatly receives an http code 200.
The client then sees that it is an office file, and forwards this call to: view.officeapps.live.com. Here the call is executed again, but returns a 404.
Somehow view.officeapps.live.com then tries again, but this time with the necessary cookies, but this also returns a 404.

It seems that more suppliers are experiencing similar issues.

We've had similar problems, with an HOA website. Studying the URLs, it's not opening Word, Edge is sending you to that OfficeApps.Live url and passing the url for the document. For some reason, OfficeApps doesn't like the indirection. My solution was to change that "Quickly Open Office Files" setting to download, so you can open it in the real Office apps on your PC.
