SharePoint - Word Properties - only original from saved list template visible, but do not new or updated properties

We are runnning SharePoint 2016

Setup:

  1. Create Document library and add required fields (at least one text field, so in word the property must be filled, and one choice field with a few choiced)

  2. Save library as list template

  3. Create new library from the saved template

  4. Add a new required text field

  5. Change the required choice field (add, remove and modify some choices)

Now comes the bug:

  1. Open a word file (new or any which was not saved in sharepoint before)

  2. In Word, save as --> Browse --> then copy the link of the new SharePoint library (from step 3 from before) in the address line and try to save the document to the newly created library

  3. Now in Word a window opens on the right with the SharePoint library properties, but the properties are the one from the original library and the document can not be saved.

  4. Strangely in the Info Panel, the correct properties are displayed and can be changed:

If propertities in the original library are changed, it is visible in the word propertites. So the properties in word access the original library and not from the newly created library I wanna save the word file to.

The funny stuff is, if you delete the original list, everything works fine and word displays the properties from the new list. So there has to be some connection. Also if you create an empty word file directly from the new button in the browser, everything works too, even if the original is not deleted.

Does anyone have an idea, how to fix it? I can not delete the original outside this test.

Hi @67969128 ,

In my test, I cannot reproduce your problem.

Here is my test:

1.Create Document library and add required fields (including one Text column: [Test Required] and one Choice column: [Choice Required] )

2.Save library as list template

157776-2.jpg

3.Create new Document library from the saved template. In my test, the new Document library named Doc1.

4.Add a new required Text column in the new Document library. This required Text column named [NewTest Required]

5.Change the required Choice column and delete old required Text column [Test Required]

6.Create a word file

7.In Word, File >> Save as >> Browse >> then copy the link of the new Document library in the address line and try to save the document to the newly created library.

8.In Word a window opens on the right with the SharePoint library properties. It can display the properties in the current Document library and can save the document.

Please perform the following troubleshooting:

a. Make sure that the original Document library is a empty library (no documents and metadata are saved)

b. Save the library as a list template, whether the "Include Content" option is checked

c. It is recommended that you recreate a new Document library for testing according to my steps

Thanks,
Echo Du

Hello Echo Du,

it works, if I save the library as template and check "Include Content" as you suggested in troubleshooting b above.

But what if the library has already a lot of content and I wanna save the library without content?
Then you can't reproduce the problem?
Or does this mean, there is not way to make it working without checking "Include Content"?

Thank you

Best regards

Martin

Hi @67969128 ,

Thanks for your reply.

According to my test, I suggest you check the "Include Content" option.

For you want to save the Document library without any content, even if the "Include Content" option is checked, it will not have any effect. Because there is no content in the library, even if you check it, there will be no effect.

Thanks,
Echo Du

My setup was just a simple way to reconstruct the problem.

We already have an original library full with data from which years ago a template was created without the "Include Content". And from this template we have created multiple libraries, with the above described problem.
So right now, I can NOT just create a new template from the original library with the "Include Content" checked, because I get this bug or would need to delete each time all data after creation.
Is it at least correct, that you could reconstruct this bug with "Include Content" not selected?
I don't suppose it is supposed to work such way, that when "Include Content" is not checked, that the properties from the original library are used.

And do you mean the only way to create new libraries (in our scenario with an already existing library with data) from a template (without this bug) would be to

 1. Create a library from the old template
 2. Delete all data from the newly created library
 3. Delete the old library template
 4. Save the library from 1. as list template with the option "Include Content"
 5. Delete the temporary library from 1.

And only now I could use the template.

I agree that this is a possible workaround if we wanna create NEW libraries, but not a solution of the problem.

Especially this does not fix all already created libraries from the original template, which already have this problem.
What can I do with existing libraries, if I can not delete the original library?
