azure site recovery for sql cluster from on prem

hi team,

i have 2 physical servers with SQL server deployed in a cluster ( shared storage) and not always on.
is it feasible to use azure site recovery to replicate these VMs? because i assume shared storage is not supported on azure.

and what is the procedure to do that?

thanks so much

@eg1995-5273 - You’re correct, using ASR on a shared storage cluster is not supported.
Checking with product owners to see if there is an alternative/workaround to support this scenario.

hi Ahmed,

i found the following link: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/site-recovery/site-recovery-sql#how-to-help-protect-a-sql-server-cluster
but there isn't additional resources, it just mentions to provision a new on prem SQL server for mirroring and replicating it to ASR. Even failback is not described.

can you advise?

@eg1995-5273 - Sorry for the delayed response!

Azure Site Recovery (ASR) only supports disaster recovery (DR) for standalone SQL server instances. An SQL cluster with shared storage cannot be protected via ASR. No recommendation from ASR. You can setup SQL Always ON for such scenarios.

Since, it is not a supported scenario, we cannot guide you much on this. Regarding the documentation, if the scenario is mentioned and not explained, you can leverage feedback section to leave a comment on the concern you have.
