Verify you own this domain error.

We recently purchased a domain name from a company that confirm the domain we purchased is not in their corporate tenant.

We conclude that someone likely abandoned a tenant with the domain name associated.

How do we demonstrate to microsoft we are the legal owner of the tenant and get them to delete the abandoned or problem tenant?

@EricTremblay-8772 Thanks for reaching out.

If you really own that domain and have the DNS modifications permissions you can do a force admin takeover of that domain.
You will need to use PowerShell with MSonline module to perform this.

Follow this link to get more details : https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/enterprise-users/domains-admin-takeover#powershell-example
You can also check https://www.thatlazyadmin.com/2020/04/02/how-to-do-a-forceful-domain-admin-take-over-in-office-365/ which shows the above steps with screenshots.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for the reply, but the spi.com domain returns a "verified"

See image from powershell run..

It is used in an other Microsoft tenant which the original seller of the domain does not control and that we do not control.

We think that this is likely a tenant that was used to test and then abandoned.

What can we do to fix this?179609-verified.jpg

@EricTremblay-8772 Apologies for delay on this. The domain which is shown in PowerShell output is spi-s.com The domain you are trying to take over is spi.com , both are different.
Can you confirm again ?

We own and use SPI-S.COM and this domain is not at issue. We purchased SPI.COM and this is the one that is "apparently" used or dormant in an other tenant.

We did speak to the seller and they do not hold SPI.COM in their tenant.

@EricTremblay-8772 Were you able to successfully get the TXT record from the commands and add it to the DNS servers for that SPI.com domain. If you have done that and still facing the issue, you will need to raise a support ticket with MS.

We have full control over the DNS records as we purchased the domain SPI.COM and were able to populate the Network Solutions Entries.

This is a problem with Microsoft refusing to allow us to use SPI.Com because it is contained in an other tenant.

We opened a ticket with Microsoft but this seems to be an issue that is "unusual" as it is being bounced around from Microsoft team to Microsoft team without anyone really taking charge.

It would be really nice if someone at Microsoft would take charge and assist us.

@EricTremblay-8772 We put on the verified status to a domain only when the customers can add the DNS records confirming they own the domain. If SPI.COM is verified at some point someone else might have owned it and added as domain in Azure AD. When did you started to own SPI.com
The support has information to see which tenant currently has spi.com and if it is verified in that tenant, you can ask them to connect you with their admin so that you can have the conversation of having the domain back.

We have control over the DNS for domain SPI.COM. When you say "add the DNS records confirming they own the domain" what exactly are you referring to?

As for official ownership date. The SPI.COM domain was transferred to our control on Network Solution on February 23rd 2022.
