Migrating Acitve Directory, DNS and DHCP from Windows 2012 to Windows 219 while keeping the same hostaname and IP addresses

Hi,

Currently I have 3 DCs, (DC1 and DC2 with DNS and Domain controller roles installed, DC3 with DNS, Domain Controller and DHCP) running on windows server 2012, and I want to migrate them to Windows Server 2019, the requirements are keeping the same roles, hostnames and IP Addresses. I found this: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/61590/ways-to-seamlessly-migrate-an-existing-dc-windows.html and I would like to confirm if it could help me, or what should the steps be?

In what step should I change the hostname? and after changing it, do I need so apply anything else?

In case of any failure during the migration, what would be my rollback?

I hope you can help me to clarify.

Hi,
sorry to jump in, but this is pretty much what I need to do too and didn't see the point of creating a pretty much identical thread.

DSPatrick said "I'd use dcdiag / repadmin tools to verify health correcting all errors found before starting any operations. Then stand up the new 2019 or 2022, patch it fully, license it, join existing domain, add active directory domain services, promote it also making it a GC (recommended), transfer FSMO roles over (optional), transfer pdc emulator role (optional), use dcdiag / repadmin tools to again verify health, when all is good you can move on to next one."

But didn't mention the process of demoting/removing the old one before moving on to the next one?

Once the new DC is up, can I just demote the old one and remove it from AD?
Then change the IP address of the new one to the old (in my case, I'm not renaming, just want a new DC with the old IP address)

Is there anything needed to refresh DNS, or is everything picked up automatically?

regards
Dave

The two prerequisites to introducing the first 2019 or 2022 domain controller are that domain functional level needs to be 2008 or higher and older sysvol FRS replication needs to have been migrated to DFSR
https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Storage-at-Microsoft/Streamlined-Migration-of-FRS-to-DFSR-SYSVOL/ba-p/425405

In order to preserve (reuse) names and address mean decommissioning each one at a time as first step.

I'd use dcdiag / repadmin tools to verify health correcting all errors found before starting any operations. Then stand up the new 2019 or 2022, patch it fully, license it, join existing domain, add active directory domain services, promote it also making it a GC (recommended), transfer FSMO roles over (optional), transfer pdc emulator role (optional), use dcdiag / repadmin tools to again verify health, when all is good you can move on to next one.

Hi,

The two prerequisites are applied. My plan is migrating one server at a time.

Hi,

There is no progress since the activities have to be approved. In case of any error, what would be the rollback?

There's really no need since you'll do them one at a time. A catastrophic roll back could be a bare metal restore of the PDC emulator and rebuilt of others but I don't see that happening.
