We are currently attempting to upgrade SQL 2008 Cluster to SQL 2012 Cluster. 3 node cluster. We were able to upgrade the A and B nodes but unable to upgrade the passive C node. The passive node doesn't have a database.

In order to upgrade the A and B nodes we had to specify the preferred node of the instance to itself. Now we are unable to fail over A to B and vice versa. It looks as though the folder for the instance on the other nodes haven't been upgraded for the other nodes in the cluster.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi JLTechSupport,

Did you start upgrade SQL FCI from the passive nodes? Please unchecked the preferred owners option.

We perform a rolling upgrade to upgrade a SQL Server failover cluster instance to a new version. Use SQL Server setup to upgrade each node participating in the failover cluster instance, one at a time, starting with the passive nodes. As you upgrade each node, it is left out of the possible owners of the failover cluster instance.

Please refer to MS document Upgrade a failover cluster instance to get more details information.
