Intune Autopilot stuck how to get out of it for a client

I'm learning Intune. Yesterday a bad Configuration profile was introduced into the settings and Autopilot was stuck and never got passed the User configuration policies. I ended up having to reinstall Windows from a USB just to get back in.

What can I do to get out of an Autopilot setup if it has gone bad so that i can review the system and so on?

Was rebuilding the OS from scratch the only way out?

I looked for a while for any sort of kill command but couldn't find it. I could only logout and restart.

@ComputerHabit-1849, For such situation, we can set "Allow users to reset device if installation error occurs:" as Yes. If there's any failure in ESP, there will be an option "reset device". Set "Allow users to use device if installation error occurs:" to Yes to gives users the option to bypass the ESP and use their devices when an installation fails. we can see more details in the following link:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/intune/enrollment/windows-enrollment-status#create-new-profile

To troubleshoot Autopilot issue, here is an article for the reference:

Note: NOn-microsoft link, just for the reference.

Hope it can help.
