WINDOW 10 - /scanos gives 0 installations found

Hello everyone.

My main system (Windows 10) went down during a power outage from bad weather. The next morning I boot it up and get to the login screen and my keyboard and mouse would not work. after rebooting, Automatic Repair runs and fails.

I have tried multiple things and followed multiple guides with no luck.

I have a Repair USB and have tried rebuilding the BCD.

I followed this guide first: https://www.thewindowsclub.com/automatic-repair-couldnt-repair-pc

 bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd

Result: yields 0 installations found

 bootrec.exe /fixmbr

Result: Completes successfully

 bootrec.exe /fixboot

Result: Access is denied.

 chkdsk /r c:

Result: After a minute or two of scans and replacing files and such, I get : Readable file record segment 9 is not writeable. An unspecified error occurred (6e74667363686b2e 1798). Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 6.

 chkdsk c:

Result: The Volume BITMAP is incorrect.

 sfc /scannow

Result: Verification 100% complete.

I'm at a loss now. I can navigate into my files via CMD on the boot USB. It seems like everything is there.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Try to perform a in-place repair. Following this article (here) for step by step instructions on how to do this.

What do you mean "in-place" repair? I have booted to a USB Windows media and attempted all the possible repair options I could find.

In-place repair is an in-place upgrade which is the process of installing Windows 10 over the existing installation of Windows 10 on your hard disk, using your installation DVD or ISO file. Performing this can repair broken operating system files while preserving your personal files, settings and installed applications.

Maybe you have confused something on the provided article, you can steps mentioned in the following link to perform the repair installation.

Sylvia, that spam isn’t helpful. Nor was your suggestion if you bothered to read the article you linked.

I like the OP face the same problem from a power outage. We can’t under any circumstances boot into our install. Let’s check that article.

You will only be able to do a repair install of Windows 10 from within Windows 10. You will not be able to do a repair install at boot or in Safe Mode.

😮

So the answer to anyone who finds this in the future is “you’re out of luck— reinstall!!!” Because these “experts” are just going to waste your time.

Wasted so much time while trying to dig the spam posted by those "experts". Thank you Jake for your post! At least I know I was not the only one facing this issue with Windows 10 boot failure when 0 installations was found by bootrec. Still keeping the failed partition backup in hope to find the way to revive it.
