No Access to the PartsUnlimited website

Who can I discuss the pre-requisite below with? The site in the pre-requisites instructions does not exist.

• Visual Studio 2017
• Google Chrome (recent edition) https://www.google.com.au/chrome/browser/features.html
• Access to the PartsUnlimited website deployed at http://cdrm-pu-demo-dev.azurewebsites.net/

http://cdrm-pu-demo-dev.azurewebsites.net/ message "This site can’t be reached" is the issue.

The PartUnlimited example application is several years old, and it seems like the deployed web app at that URL is no longer available or at least isn't deployed at the moment.

However, all the code is open source and available in this GitHub repo.

And the lab at https://microsoft.github.io/PartsUnlimited/pandp/200.1x-PandP-ManualdeploywithVS2017toAzure.html walks through deploying the web app to your own Azure App Service, so you could walk through those steps and then continue with the testing labs.

I know this thread is relatively old, but as I've just gone through this process of getting the parts unlimited project running I'd like to pass on some of the issues and solutions I encountered in 2024 to possibly help others in the same boat.

(By the way, if you want to see the resulting website in action, one version of it can be found here: https://partsunlimited-web-apps.azurewebsites.net/)

Notes:

In the yaml the vmImage needs to be changed as the one used is deprecated. Basically, use "windows-latest" instead of "vs2017-win2016"

If you create an SQL Server resource in Azure with its default settings, you'll notice that the authentication will be Entra-only. This means you use what used to be called Azure Active Directory. However, the tutorial requires the use of SQL Authentication. So what you need to do is go to your SQL Server resource and there, under Microsoft Entra ID, choose 'Disable Microsoft Entra-only authentication'.

Also on the SQL Server resource page, use ‘Allow Azure services and resources to access this server’ under 'Networking'.

(optional) In the repo, I'd recommend setting the flag CustomError to On instead of Off in the file web.config. This way you can see error messages in the website.

With these hints you should be able to walk through the tutorial without too many problems.
