General queries regarding management pack, management group & resource pool

Hi, I am relatively new to SCOM and trying to learn some basics which I couldn't find in https://docs.microsoft.com/ (Sorry, if I overlooked some details). Could anyone from team please help me on the followings -

  1. I believe there is no technical restrictions but is it must (or recommended) to assign one management pack to only one resource pool in the same Management Group?

  2. Same way, Is it must (or recommended) for one Management Server "not to be" part of more than one Resource Pool in the same Management Group?

  3. Do we have any limit on the number of resource pools a single Management Group can have?

  4. Do we have any limit on the number of management servers which can be part of single Management Group?

Thank you in advance. Feel free to point me to right links/existing-answers/docs etc.

Hi,

Thanks for posting in Microsoft MECM Q&A forum.

==>1. I believe there is no technical restrictions but is it must (or recommended) to assign one management pack to only one resource pool in the same Management Group?
Management pack has nothing to do with resource pool. Management pack is actually running on the client. After a management pack is imported into a management group, Operations Manager immediately begins monitoring objects based on default configurations and thresholds that are defined in the management pack.

==>2. Same way, Is it must (or recommended) for one Management Server "not to be" part of more than one Resource Pool in the same Management Group?
One management server could be the member of multiple resource pools in the same management group. Every management server in the resource pool is like something as "bandwith", the management servers automatically balance their workload.

==>3. Do we have any limit on the number of resource pools a single Management Group can have?
Per the official document, there is no built-in limits.

==>4. Do we have any limit on the number of management servers which can be part of single Management Group?
No, the more management servers in one management group, the better perfermance we have.

Additional reminder, we have the limit on the number of management servers in one resource pool. When we reach five management servers in one resource pool, there is the potential for the Operational database to experience significant load, which might generate enough latency to affect resource pool calculations. Refer to the official article:
Resource pool design considerations

Moreover, Operations Manager has no built-in limits regarding the number of agents that a single management group can support. Depending on the hardware that you use and the monitoring load (more management packs deployed means a higher monitoring load) on the management group, you might need multiple management groups in order to maintain acceptable performance.

Hope it helps. Thanks for your time.

Best regards,
Simon

Thank you, Simon. This really helps. Appreciate your time & input.

Would it be possible to get your help on following clarifications -

===> 1 - You had mentioned about Management Pack running on client. Client in this case is the "Remote Device" which SCOM is monitoring? For Example - SCOM Monitoring a "Network Switch", in this MP will be running on the Management Server part of that Management Group, correct?

===> 5 - (Additional Question): Possible to know what is "Network Device" in terms of SCOM? It's called out 1000 Network Devices supported with 1 Resource Pool and "2000 Network Devices supported with 2 Resource Pool", can this scalability continue to go up with increasing number of resource pools in the management group.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply and accepting the answer.

===> 1- If the exmaple is Windows or Linux device that can install SCOM agent, the answer is yes, MP will be running on the Management Server part of that Management Group. Acturely, to reduce network utilization and storage requirements on the client agent, only the parts of the management pack that are required by the client agent to perform monitoring are downloaded to the agent for local storage. For example, the sections of the management packs which define rules and monitors are downloaded, while the sections for knowledge and reports are not.

However, for Network Switch, SCOM use Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to monitor it and the MP will not download to Network Switch. Refer to:
How to discover network devices in Operations Manager

===> 5 - (Additional Question): "Network Device" in SCOM refers to physical network routers and switches, including the interfaces and ports on those devices, and the virtual local area networks (VLANs) and Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP) groups that they participate in, as well as firewalls and load balancers. And yes, the scalability can continue to go up with increasing number of resource pools in the management group.

If you have any questions in future, we warmly welcome you to post in Microsoft Q&A forum again. Have a nice day!

Best regards,
Simon
