Upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 Using media creation tool fails

Hi everyone !

I am trying to upgrade my friend's PC from Windows 8.1 to 10 but it turns out to be much more of a pain than I expected.

I am using the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool directly on the PC to upgrade it while keeping files and apps.

But at around 70% of the installation I get the error "Failed to install Windows 10".

I will link the setupact.log file located in $WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther, but these two errors seem to show what the problem could be:
CSetupManager::Execute(295): Result = 0x80004005
CSetupHost::Execute(433): Result = 0x80004005

I have uninstalled Avast and even tried installing Windows 10 while having Windows Defender turned off and I upgraded everything in Windows Update to be sure W8.1 is up to date.

Can anyone help out ? Thanks !!

Troubleshooting can take considerable time.

Consider a clean install:

Will this keep the apps installed ?

The clean install method requires the saving of important files, and the reinstallation of drivers and applications.

Troubleshooting Windows upgrade failures can take significant time and may fail.

If you want to run routine troubleshooting steps they can be provided.

There may be pay software that can move applications.

It's often best to start with a clean installation as it provides optimal performance, allows modifying BIOS and drive partitions, cleans unneeded files, any unknown spyware, etc.

Hi @NathanDubuc-1009

Error code 0x80004005 typically happens when you access shared folders or drives, use specific programs, or have a problem installing Windows updates.

If the in-place upgrade fails the only option we are left is with a clean install. A clean installation of Windows 10 is the process of erasing the hardware and setting up a new fresh copy of the platform when a computer has a problem.
