Upgrade Oracle 12c to 19c in VM Linux

We're planning to upgrade Oracle database from 12c to 19c in VM Linux machine. It's advised that we should bring down the VM and take full back up before upgrading database. However we'd like to minimize downtime as this is production server, may I know anyone has experience of upgrading Oracle 12c to Oracle 19c without shutting down server for back up. Thank you.

You can create an oracle database in a Linux virtual machine but i have seen anywhere that you could upgrade from oracle 12c to Oracle 19c in VM Linux.
