Java won't download. What should I do?

Every time I try to download Java, I get an error message that reads "An error has occurred in the script on this page.
Line: 1
Char: 1
Error: Expected ")"
Code: 0
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
Yes No"
I have tried all the options I can find online. I try to load up the latest version, I have turned off third-party browser extensions, I have registered the urlmon.dll file, and all of that still leaves me with this problem. If I click yes, it does nothing but says it is downloading if I try again before restarting. After a restart, it just goes back to the beginning. What do I do?

On my Win11 laptop, I used the latest versions of both Chrome and Edge and clicked on the "Agree and start free download" button. Both successfully downloaded jre-8u331-windows-x64.exe.

Forum users have no way of knowing what is different with your pc. Do you have javascript problems with other web sites?
Do you have all outstanding patches (MS update) installed? Have you recently experienced some other problem maybe with some antivirus software? Have you recently installed some software?

I would also suggest that you share a screen image of the error as it may contain additional information such as the script name.
