Sharepoint Online Classic sites Structured navigation settings not saved

So our client has this SPOnline Intranet built on 2016 and it is using only classic sites. The site architecture is sitecollection->subsite->subsite etc. We and our client knows that this is the old way but they are not ready yet to reconstruct the whole architecture to rely only on site collections and ditch the subsites.

Anyway they are using Managed navigation as the top navigation ("Global navigation") and structured navigation as the left side navigation ("Current navigation").
I'm having trouble to hide, delete or make visible links with structural navigation. Whatever setting I choose and hit OK the changes are not being saved.

Here for example I'm trying to hide those subsites (highlighted with yellow) from the left navigation and when I hit OK it doesn't change anything...
and when I go back to the settings those sites does not show as hidden.

This has worked before without problems and it has been broken now for at least two months, that's when our client noticed it.

Hi @kalervojankko,

1.You could uncheck "Show subsites" and "Show pages" > OK then open Navigation Settings check "Show subsites" and "Show pages" options again.

2.Navigation Settings > Structural Navigation: Refresh Cache > Refresh

Hi,

Unfortunately no this did not help.

I also noticed that the settings page acts a bit weird. Similar to this old issue: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/6f0b5952-82c2-49fc-8b7d-4cbc75fba13d/cant-save-navigation-settings-unexpected-error?forum=sharepointadminprevious

We have exactly the same problem as stated in the above link:

This is causing the links to act a little funky and not highlighting the links when I click on them. I can still add and move up and down but the links or headers I click on are not highlighted like normally. When I try to submit my changes I receive this error and no changes are saved.

Also there's some lines showing in devtools console which are pointing to AreaNavigationSettings.aspx page.

So it's probably something in the custom masterpage is not compatible anymore with SPOnline which throws those errors in the console and makes that Navigation settings page act weird.

Ok, we found that some of our customizations are not compliant anymore with SPO and renaming/removing couple .js files fixes the issue.

Apparently some update to SPO has broken these.
