UPN mismatch and sharepoint online

Hi All,

We do have Sharepoint online setup for intranet along with work flows and etc.

i have a major concern in UPN setup in our environment.

currently UPN is set up as employeeid@publicdomain.com
SMTP= firstnamelastname@publicdomain.com

i would like to know what could be the impact if didn't change the prefix of the UPN similar to SMTP and continue the sharepoint online. currently we dont have onedrive setup.

is it must to have UPN=SMTP for both SPO and onedrive to work seamlessly?

Both changing prefix and suffix belong to changing UPN and according to this Microsoft official article,

It is best practice, however, to have the person's logon UPN match their primary SMTP address.

@EmilyDu-MSFT

Thank you.

My UPN domain name in on-prem AD is publicly routable domain. Hence i have mentioned the Suffix(Emp id) of the UPN. However, my question is

For SharePoint Online, if you change the prefix of the UPN, it will affect some Office 365 services related to SharePoint Online, such as outlook, flow.

For OneDrive, you could see this reference.

in the past we changed primary domain name used in organization's SPO (together with all users UPNs) so in general it is possible to change it in future if needed.
