Replace classic team site (root) with modern communication site

Guys, we would like to replace Classic Team site (root site) to Communication site as root site. in SharePoint Online
And for the current root site there are several subsites associated to the root site.

So if we replace with comm site what happens to the "Subsites" and the permissions ?

I was referring the below MS Doc and it said "subsites, will be archived". What does it mean ? do users have access or no access to the subsites ?

Replacing the root site with another site replaces the entire site collection with the new site collection. If your current root site has subsites, they'll be archived.

Please advise ?

Hi @Srini-4386,

It means if the classic site collection had subsites, they aren't changed. For Reference: Enable the communication site experience on classic team sites

And here is a article about how to convert Classic Team Site to Communication Site.

And just to be clear i'm not just converting the classic Teamsite to Comm site. . I want to replace my old Root classic Team site with modern site (Comm site)

The article you are referring is "Enable the communication site experience on classic team sites" and not related to the Root site changes and impact right ? please advise

I would recommend to test it first: create test SPO tenant with classic site in the root with few sub sites, try to replace it with modern site and see what will happen on practice.

Sado - Thank you for your response. Yes we are planning to do that . But after 2019 when you create a Tenant by default MS is creating the root site with Modern Communication site right ?

How can we create test SPO tenant with classic site in the root ?

try to create new dev tenant, then try to delete root site collection from admin center and create classic site there. But again not sure that it is possible - should be tested
