Hi,
We have an MS SQL database node (standalone). We are planning to make a cluster out of it with a VIP serving both servers. I have no idea why it was built as standalone in the first place since this is now production database. Is this easily possible? What are the high level steps for this? We'd need to replicate the steps in a dev environment first.
It seems that if there was an easy way it would go through AlwaysON. Thoughts on this is appreciated too.

Do you mean you want to upgrade a stand-alone instance of SQL Server to a failover cluster instance node?
No, I’m afraid it is not supported. Please refer to this doc for more details.
We need to create and configure a single-node SQL Server failover cluster instance, and then add the second node to the SQL Server failover cluster.
Please refer to the doc and some articles about Step-by-step Installation of SQL Server Failover Cluster part 1, part 2, part 3 and part 4, which might be helpful.
