How to test DR from one region to another

Hi all,

Got a question regarding our annual DR test, first time in Azure.

We've got 5 scenarios but the main ones are migrating to secondary location from primary (prestaged), test conditions and then migrate back and confirm all data intact and working.

The going back is causing us issues as we'd like to keep the original VMs intact (as much as possible) so after the test we can bring them back up easily.

What is the best way of going about this test to make sure:
- it's successfull
- we can roll back easily and don't need to rebuild VMs or anything like that
- our firewall rules (hub&spoke, protected hub) are in place if we use new VMs instead (DR policy perhaps?)

@JurajBenak-0306 Thank you for your post and I apologize for the delayed response!

From the description I learned that you want to perform DR test from one region to another and have couple of question around roll back option and network configuration.

Please find the answers to your questions below:

What is the best way of going about this test to make sure - it's successfull
You can leverage "test failover" option.
Test Failover- You run a test failover to validate your replication and disaster recovery strategy, without any data loss or downtime. A test failover doesn't impact ongoing replication, or your production environment. You can run a test failover on a specific virtual machine (VM), or on a recovery plan containing multiple VMs.

You need to set up secondary region just like the way you did for primary region. For more information see this link - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/site-recovery/azure-to-azure-quickstart

Hi Sadiqh,

thanks for reply. The main issue for us was to create A -> B -> A1 (parallel) scenario to work. With VMware we used to have options of snapshot the VM and at the end of the exercise, revert back.

We've found out with Azure Backup that backup takes snapshot first, then transfers data in the backghound to the vault and keeps the snapshot ready for several days based on defined policy. From then, we can restore the data quickly to the original VMs which is exactly what we need.
