Microsoft Authenticator App - can't add account

I've been trying to add my school/work account to the Microsoft Authenticator app, but when I type in my email I get a notification on my screen telling me to "approve sign-in request" and "we'ce sent a notification to your mobile device. Please open the Microsoft authenticator app to respond".

But I can't do that when I'm already in the app. The only other way of verifying my account is to send a code to the app, which results in the same problem. I have no other way to verify my account that through the app, when I try to log in to my Microsoft account on the website, I just get the same promps.

I've seen this exact problem be posted about before, but the reply that was given was to revoke my MFA sessions. But I can't do this either, because I just get the same exact messages on the screen, which I've already established I can't do since I would have to log in through the authenticator app for this as well.

How can this be sorted out? I really need to log into my school/work account, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you save your backup codes when you set up this the first time?
