Exchange 2010 VM live-move from Hyper-V 2012R2 host to 2016 Hyper-V host

Hi, everyone,

Source: all inclusive , simple( no edge server, no DAG, no cluster) Exchange 2010 on windows 08R2 Virtual Machine sitting on Hyper-V 2012 host with 4T mail databases.

Target: newer hardware and hyper-V 2016.

to-do: live move this VM box from windows 2012 server to 2016 server, any issues for exchange databases? I have live moved a couple of other VM from the same windows 2012 to windows 2016 with no issues whatever but those VMs are more or less stateless, Exchange Database is very stateful ( transactional), will live move cause exchange database corrupt issues?

any suggestions are greatly appreciated

Hi @SeanChange-5335

Agree with Andy's reply below, and I still want to remind you that Exchange 2010 has end of support, it's better to upgrade your server to a new version to get better user experience.

I knew it's outdated. Can't Upgrade , it's business decision, I can only make it "more comfortable " in its remaining life, like moving it to a better hardware and newer container

Hi there,

In addition to the replies provided, this article shows you how to set up hosts that aren't clustered so you can do live migrations between them.

Set up hosts for live migration without Failover Clustering https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/deploy/set-up-hosts-for-live-migration-without-failover-clustering
