Azure VM Backup vm with a shared disk

Hi,

I am trying to backup 2 Suse VMs with 3 LRS disks and 1 ZRS shared disk.

Since it is not possible to backup a shared disk, and it is not possible to do exclude or included disks using Azure Portal, I am using CMD.

I am able to configure the backup using CMD using 3 scenarios:

1st vm with backup enable, then I exclude the shared disk (In azure portal it shows disk 4 excluded)

2nd enable vm backup with disk 4 exclude of shared disk (In azure portal it shows disk 4 excluded)

3rd enable vm backup with disk include if OS, disk 1 2 3 (In azure portal it shows included disk: OS, 1,2,3)

In all the scenarios backup fail with error of having a shared disk!

Is there a solution for this bug?

Hello @JanNuaman-2253,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A platform. Happy to answer your question.

Azure VM backup is not supported for VMs with shared disks, even if you chose to exclude the shared disk from backup. The alternate approach is to use Azure Disk Backup for shared disks.

Azure Disk Backup supports backup and restore of both OS and data disks (including shared disks), whether or not they're currently attached to a running Azure virtual machine.

Here is the link to Azure VM backup matrix for your reference: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/backup/backup-support-matrix-iaas#vm-storage-support
