azure hybrid benefit

HI team,

i want to provide azure hybrid benefit using CSP. Following the official documentation, https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/partner-center/csp-software-subscriptions it indicates how we can add it from CSP portal and so on. But then it is mentioned that you can also download the software and the key from the partner center.

can i know why would i want ISOs or keys if i want to deploy azure vm and use AHB? in the end i don't have to insert keys, it is just choosing the AHB button

your help is highly appreciated

thanks

Hello @eg1995-5273 ,
Thanks you for reaching out on Microsoft QnA.
As I understand, you are choosing Azure's hybrid benefit to purchase license separately for Windows servers, etc and not pay-per-use with the VM. This saves a lot of cost. Now, in your scenario I believe you are purchasing the licenses from your CSP (Cloud Solution Provider). So, your CSP will provide you with the activation key that you have to enter to activate the Windows License after deploying the VM.

Does this help answering your question?

we never activate the azure windows VM using licenses if deployed from the gallery. we just toggle the azure hybrid benefit button.
if you can get more insights or if anyone else can help from the community that would be really nice

thank you

Hi, let me clarify your concern. Windows Server subscriptions allow you to use the AHB and you may do so by choosing the AHB button. However, on-prem customers (who are not using Azure or planning to move to Azure) can also purchase Windows Server and SQL Server subscriptions through CSP for a 1 year or 3 year period.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/partner-center/csp-on-premises-software

For example, there are customers who what to use Windows Server for a 1 year project and discard the license. So buying a perpetual Windows Server license will be not cost-effective if they are not going to use it after 1 year. So they may decide to purchase Windows Server as a subscription for 1 year and use it on a on-prem server. To use it on-premise, you will need an image/ISO and a key.

Similarly, a customer may want to develop and test an application on-prem for 6 months and then decide to move to Azure. So you will download the image, create a VM on-premise and activate it using the key. After 6 months, they can move the application to an Azure VM (and delete the on-prem VM), and use the AHB button so they can use the same Windows Server subscription on Azure for remaining 6 months.

Hope this helps.
