Spam management

When you are a moderator on Microsoft Q&A, you see a Moderation link on your Avatar. Clicking on it takes you to the Moderation queue, where there are 3 tabs:

  1. Moderation
  2. Reported
  3. Spam

The 3 tabs now have the following functionality:

  • Moderators now can see why the content is in moderation: whether automatically routed there by a spam detector or by actions of another user. Moderators also can see the date and time when the action took place.
  • Moderators can sort the content in the Moderation queue based on when each piece of content was sent to moderation with either older or newer moderation events shown first.
  • Moderators can sort to group the content by the authoring user to more easily spot problematic behavior patterns in particular users.

Moderators can delete all content belonging to a user.

Spam is caught in two ways:

  1. Automatically: Via our automatic spam detectors.
  2. Manually: Users can report content for moderation review.

Automatic spam report - The Moderation tab

This tab is for content caught by one of the spam detectors, based on some rules.

Note

While items show up on the Moderation tab, they are no longer visible in the community.

To manage content in this folder:

  1. Publish. To publish the content back as it is a false positive.
  2. Reject. To remove the problematic thread from the site.
  3. Reject as spam (RECOMMENDED). To remove the problematic thread from the site, move it to the Spam queue, and report the thread as spam to help improve the automatic spam detector algorithm.
  4. Under Sort order, you can sort by user. If the user is a spammer or a bot, you then can:
    1. Suspend the user, so they user will not be able to post again in the community.
    2. Delete all user's posts if all user's posts are spam.

Manual spam reports - The Reported tab

This tab is for content that a user has manually sent to a moderator for review. When they do that, users have to send an explanation for it as well:

  • Spam
  • Advertising
  • Offensive, abusive, or inappropriate
  • Content violates Microsoft Terms of Use
  • Copyright violation
  • Misleading
  • Someone is not being nice
  • Has personal or sensitive information for a user
  • Other reason

Until a moderation has acted, the content will continue to be displayed on Microsoft Q&A. Users do not see a note in the content showing that the content is under moderation review.

To manage content in this folder:

  1. Reject as spam. The content is moved to the Spam queue and reported as spam to the spam detector to help them improve their spam algorithm.
  2. Cancel Report. The content is not spam. It removes the content from this queue.
  3. Click on the content and edit the part that is offensive. Then, go back to the Reported folder, and click on Cancel Report.
  4. Under Sort order, you can sort by user. If the user is a spammer or a bot, you then can:
    1. Suspend the user, so they user will not be able to post again in the community.
    2. Delete all user's posts if all user's posts are spam.

Automatic spam report - The Spam tab

This is the tab where all content reported by another spam detector is automatically sent or users report as spam from the Report folder. Items in the Spam tab are visible to community members with the following disclaimer at the top "This thread is currently awaiting moderation. If you believe this to be in error, contact a system administrator.". Items in the Spam folder will not show in any search results.

To manage content in this folder:

  1. Publish. The content is not spam. It removes the content from this queue.
  2. Click on the content and edit the part that is offensive. Then, go back to the Reported folder, and click on Publish.
  3. Under Sort order, you can sort by user. If the user is a spammer or a bot, you then can:
    1. Suspend the user, so they user will not be able to post again in the community.
    2. Delete all user's posts if all user's posts are spam.

In order to allow moderators to go over the reported spam, we have set a Spam Queue Retention Period of 1 day. So, if the content is spam, you will see the content there for 1 day. Simply ignore it if you already did the steps above.
