As we understand the ask here is to copy a foo.gz file ( which contains binary files ) and then read the binary files the please do let us know if its not accurate.

I have a quick question as to why are you overwriting ? Is the intent here is to write back the binary content on the same file whcih you read ? My apoloziges I am surely missing something .
