BizSpark Startup of the Day - Particle Code

The BizSpark startup of the day is Particle Code, based in the US. Below you will find an interview with Galia Ben-Artzi, Co-Founder of Particle Code. All the best to them and congratulations for being the startup of the day!

Tell us who you are and your role in the company:

Co-founder, VP Business Development.

What did you do before creating your company?

Co-founded Mytopia, a cross-platform social games company that was acquired in June 2010.

How do you feel being the most promising ‘Startup of the Day’ per Microsoft BizSpark?

I feel eager to become the most promising startup of the week, month and year as well.

What is your company’s mission?

Particle Code is the UN of platforms. We want to empower developers to focus on making great mobile content and experiences for users, and take the guesswork out of which platform to support and which devices to focus on. Particle Code allows one code to rule them all, while compiling NATIVE applications for every smartphone OS from one singular codebase.

In 140 characters or less, tell us what your company does:

Particle is an open, extendable cross-platform SDK that automates porting, enabling developers to create native apps on all smartphones from a single codebase.

How did you get the idea for your company?

At Mytopia, we spent about 90% of our time and resources porting our games from one platform to another. In true startup fashion, we began throwing technology at the problem. Particle is the result of over 5 years of effort building a framework that would automate the porting process and allow us to manage fragmentation.

Tell us about your funding history. Are you currently looking for funding? If so, how much?

The founders of Mytopia all rejoined to create and finance Particle Code. Our angel investors hopped on board as well, most notably Eric Benhamou (former CEO and Chairman of Palm) of Benhamou Global Ventures.

How many employees do you have? How many developers?

20 employees, 15 developers.

Are you hiring? If yes, what are you hiring for and where?

Yes! We are hiring like crazy. Come join us in downtown Palo Alto where the fridge is always full of coconut water. Be part of a funded, growing startup solving a major problem and join a team (more like a family) of successful founders that is hungry for more. Check out our open positions online at

Which platform are you building on?Why?

Particle supports iPhone/iPad, Android, Windows Phone 7, BlackBerry, Symbian, J2ME devices. The IDE is available for Windows and Mac environments.

Where do you see opportunities today in the Software/Internet area?

Everywhere. Even though we come from a content creation background, we see the biggest opportunity in empowering other developers to focus on their content while reaching the widest possible customer base. We believe that developers should not have to bet their business on who will win the platform wars, and that code should be flexible and forward-compatible in order to adapt to wherever this dynamic industry may go.

What do you think about the BizSpark Program?

We are super psyched about being part of the BizSpark program. It’s a warm, comfy environment for startups and a great place to get connected to parts of the industry we might not otherwise be able to reach. Also, who doesn’t love free stuff? Software, advice, visibility, couldn’t ask for much more in a program.

Do you have any advice for young Software entrepreneurs?

Get enough sleep, and do as much yoga as you can fit in.

Who’s your role model?

She is two parts Buddha, one part Steve Jobs.

What’s the ONE THING you would like readers to take away from this interview?

The Particle platform is a break through, patented technology that actually does what sounds like mobile magic. Check it out for yourself and become a believer. Never port again.
