Selecting Columns to Display in SSMS

In SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) 2008, you can now select columns of properties that you want to display in the Object Explorer Details (OED) panel. You can show the Object Explorer Details by pressing F7, and then you can right-click in the headers to select the columns of data you want to see.

Each "type" of data has different selections. In other words, when you click on the "Databases" node in Object Explorer (OE), the Object Explorer Details columns can show things like "Space Free" and "Last Backup".

There are a couple of other interesting things about these column selections. You can left-click-and-hold ("drag") a column and place it in a new order. You can click a column header once to order the display by a column, and click it again to reverse-order by that column. And here's my favorite: you can highlight a set of rows in the data and press CTRL-C. When you do that, the selection, along with the header name, is placed in memory in tab-delimited format. You can now paste that into Excel or Word, or even Outlook, and the columns are maintained, nice and lined up.

As a final touch, you'll notice that the selections you make are maintained for each panel.
