Have you ever tried Skype on your Windows Mobile phone?
If you're in a position like me and have lots of friends and family on the other side of the globe, you've probably heard of Skype. For the few who haven't heard of it, Skype is an application that allows you to make telephone calls over the Internet using Voice over IP (VoIP). I've been an ardent fan of Skype ever since a friend from Europe introduced me to it almost 3 years ago. Skype has enabled me to get by without having a landline in my house and has saved me countless dollars (and Euros) in roaming and long distance charges.
I've even managed to convince my rather computer illiterate family in Europe of the advantages of Skype and now my sister in Germany and I enjoy the advantages of having free peer-to-peer phone conversations whenever we can. It gets even better if we add a friend or two to our conversations - it's hard to believe we are thousand of miles away from each other!
The cool thing is, that Skype is not only available for your desktop computer, but for your Windows Mobile phone as well. Even though the quality of the calls is not always perfect, it sure beats having to pay for long distance charges on your cell phone. All you need for it to work is a high speed wireless Internet connection over WiFi or 3G.
Skype 2.2 for Windows Mobile has some improvements over the previous version. The application now features a much better integration with the phone application on your Windows Mobile device. In the previous version, when I would receive a regular cell phone call while I was in a Skype call, there was no way for me to switch between the two call modes and, so I usually ended up letting my cellular call go to voicemail.
Now, when I'm in a Skype call and my cell phone rings, my Skype call immediately goes into a Hold mode when I accept the cell phone call. As soon as I hang up on the cellular call, the Skype call automatically resumes.
