Bill Gates to transition to part time role in 2008

Today, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer have announced a transition plan for Bill to move from his full time role of Chief Software Architect to full time on the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation (more here).

They’ve been planning this for a while, so while it’s big news, the impact it makes on the company probably won’t be as big as it could be.

If you want to find out more, check out the Channel9 Video, and the press release.

Bill will be sticking around full time until July 2008, and after that he will be part time. Once he leaves his full time role he’ll be full time in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which has done lots of great work around the world.

I’m actually looking forward to seeing what the foundation gets up to with Bill there full time – particularly given what the foundation has done to date.

So – Ray Ozzie is stepping up to Chief Software Architect immediately and Craig Mundy is also stepping in to become the Chief Research and Strategy Officer. There are a few other changes, but these are the most visible ones.
