DoCoMo setback for Microsoft
By Michiyo Nakamoto and Robert Budden - DoCoMo, Japan's largest mobile operator, yesterday dealt a further blow to Microsoft's ambitions to dominate the market for operating systems in third-generation mobile telephony by announcing that it favoured alternative technologies. The mobile operator said it would promote the use of rival software from Symbian and open-source Linux systems to help cut development costs for suppliers and ensure handsets were compatible with other operators using the same W-CDMA 3G Network standard.

The entry of Taiwan's electronics makers into the market for "smartphones," which offer sophisticated email, Internet and music and video functions, promises the software giant further support in its battle against UK-based rival Symbian and PalmSource Inc (PSRC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) of the United States.
