What’s New: Office 2016 for Office 365 – March updates

We recently rolled out our March feature updates for Office client applications, via Current Channel. If you get the new Office 2016 apps as part of your subscription, via Current Channel release, there are new feature updates coming to you. New Feature: Enhanced Automatic Replies (Out of Office) capabilities

Posted: April 12, 2016 | Action: Awareness | Enhanced Automatic Replies from Outlook on the web is a new Office 365 feature. You’ll begin seeing this new feature over the coming weeks as we roll it out. When users set an automatic reply (Out of office) message with an end date in Outlook on the web, Outlook can now automatically decline meetings for that period of time as well as decline any future invites that the user receives for a date in which they are away. Updated Feature: What’s new in Office 365 admin center

Posted: April 12, 2016 | Action: Awareness | For April, we continued our work to improve the new Office 365 admin center to make it faster, easier and more efficient for you to manage the service. The latest updates include improved search, additional user list management functionality and enhancements for the mobile admin app. Log into the new admin center and try the new functionality. Introducing a new homepage experience for Office 365 users

Posted: April 13, 2016 | Action: Awareness | We’re updating the default Office 365 portal experience for users to make it more intuitive and consistent across devices. The new home page simplifies access to your services and recent documents, while making it easier to install applications with 1-click. The new Office 365 home page experience is available today for logged in users who navigate to Over the next few months we will be redirecting users who try to connect from the old experience at Users who are not logged in, will have a different experience than those who are. We are removing Windows Azure Active Directory Synchronization from Office 365

Posted: April 13, 2016 | Action: Required by April 4, 2017 | We will be removing the Windows Azure Active Directory Synchronization feature from Office 365, beginning April 4, 2017. You are receiving this message because our reporting indicates your organization is using Windows Azure Active Directory Synchronization. When this change is implemented, administrators will no longer be able to synchronize their Active Directories. Instead of using Windows Azure Active Directory Synchronization, use Azure Active Directory Connect. More information can be found at


OneDrive for Business Next Generation Sync Client

Posted: April 14, 2016 | Action: Awareness | We’re delivering a new sync client for OneDrive for Business that will provide a faster and more reliable sync experience. You’ll begin seeing this change starting May 15, 2016, and rolling out over the coming months. When this change takes effect, the old sync client will stop working. If you try to synchronize with OneDrive for Business, using the old sync client, you will be informed to install the new sync client. Deprecation of Yammer Leaderboard App

Posted: April 15, 2016 | Action: Awareness | Yammer Leaderboard app will be deprecated on April 30, 2016. Last month, we announced the new Activity Reporting Dashboard in the Office 365 Admin Center Preview. In a follow up to this post, we shared the news that Yammer reports will be added to the dashboard starting in this month. Updated Feature: OneNote Class Notebook

Posted: April 15, 2016 | Action: Awareness | We are updating the OneNote Class Notebook with additional features. We are updating the Class Notebook Add-in for OneNote as free preview download in the Class Notebook app in Office 365. This change will roll out to your tenant starting April 14, 2016. You are receiving this notification because you have teacher and faculty user licenses. This add-in is for OneNote 2013 or 2016 desktop, and is designed to help teachers save time and be even more efficient with their Class Notebooks. The add-in includes page and section distribution to students, quick review of student work, and easier access to the Class Notebook app. This updates adds assignment and grade distribution to Microsoft Classroom or a supported Learning Management system, along with other top requested educator features. New Feature: Yammer user profile update from Azure Active Directory

Posted: April 15, 2016 | Action: Awareness | Yammer user profile update from Azure Active Directory (AAD) is a new Office 365 feature. You’ll begin seeing this new feature starting today. User profile properties can be updated centrally in Azure Active Directory, and the changes will be automatically applied to Yammer. This includes properties such as first name, last name, title and department. If you are using the legacy Yammer Directory Sync tool for this purpose, you can stop using it. Instead, use the Azure AD Connect tool to synchronize user profile properties from your on-premises environment. The legacy Yammer Directory Sync tool will stop working on Dec 1st, 2016. New Feature: Safety Tips in Outlook and Outlook on the web

Posted: April 15, 2016 | Action: Awareness | Exchange Online Protection (EOP) already protects your organization with industry-leading spam and malware prevention. However, these attacks are so well crafted that they look legitimate. Sometimes putting messages into the Junk Email folder isn’t enough. Over the coming weeks, we’re going to provide additional information when users check their email in Outlook on the web, and in Outlook. Moving forward, as an example, a red Safety Tip in an email will mean that the message received contains something suspicious. We recommend deleting these types of email messages without opening them. We’ll continue to add more features to Safety Tips to ensure users have the best, most protected experience. You don’t need to do anything for this change. If you received a similar notification from us before, this update is that we're also making Safety Tips available for your email in Outlook, not just Outlook on the web. OneDrive for Business has made significant progress in the last 6 months, and was recently named a Leader by Forrester Research in “The Forrester Wave™: Enterprise File Sync and Share Platforms, Cloud Solutions, Q1 2016.” You can read the report here. Introducing a new home page experience for Office 365 users

Earlier this month, we began to roll out a new, more intuitive home page experience for Office 365 users. This update brings a fresh new look and feel to the Office 365 welcome page, and a range of new features for both administrators and users. We’re constantly looking for opportunities to improve the way our users get things done. The new Office 365 home page enables more consistent and unified experiences for work, education and home users across every device. This new platform also helps us respond to user feedback and deliver innovative new features at a faster pace than ever before. As part of this update, we’ve also taken the opportunity to add improved page responsiveness for a better, more consistent experience across all your devices. Office 365 lets you get your best work done, no matter what device you’re using, and the new home page will look beautiful on your phone, tablet, PC and Mac.


Email Safety Tips in Office 365

Today’s spam and malware attacks are sometimes so well-crafted they may look legitimate to your users, and putting messages into the Junk Email folder isn’t enough. Over the coming weeks, we are rolling out Safety Tips in Exchange Online Protection, an additional layer of protection for all users that provides a warning to the user in an email that is marked suspicious, or a reassurance when a message is safe. When a message includes a safety tip, the tip will be displayed in a messaging bar at the top of the email in one of four color-coded categories indicating that the message is either Suspicious, Unknown, Trusted or Safe.


Can a shift to the cloud improve your security posture?

Sara Manning Dawson, a principal group manager for the Office 365 Core Foundations Team, recently returned from the RSA Conference in San Francisco, where each year the security community meets to discuss the latest security risks and concerns, share best practices and showcase new solutions. As the threat landscape continues to evolve, so do the stakes for staying ahead with security intelligence. IT is under pressure to be able to quickly prevent, detect and remediate to minimize the impact of attacks if they do occur. As many of our customers are now discovering, keeping up with changes to the security landscape is one of the unique advantages of the cloud. In fact, there are a number of properties that make the cloud inherently different versus managing your own IT services. These go well beyond security, but have important security implications and benefits. As she explains in this episode of “From Inside the Cloud,” harnessing the unique properties of the cloud can give you a security advantage and reduce overall risk.

Add videos, choose your viewing experience and tell your story in more languages on Sway!

Last month, we came out with the ability to create Sways right from your Microsoft Photos albums and breathe life to your photos through Living Images. Thanks to your continuous feedback, we’ve added several features over the past weeks to make Sways even easier to create and more engaging for viewers. These new features include adding video to your Sways, enhancing the viewing experience and the addition of 14 new languages for Sway.
