When must I upgrade from Office Professional Plus 2010 Subscription to Office 365 ProPlus?
I commonly hear this question from partners and customers – How long do I have before I must upgrade from Office Professional Plus 2010 Subscription to Office 365 ProPlus?
Customers that were on Office 365 pre-service upgrade still have access to download and install Office Professional Plus 2010 Subscription, in addition to the current version that released with the new Office 365 called Office 365 ProPlus (2013). Many customers are still running Office Professional Plus 2010 Subscription either because they are still on XP (Office 365 ProPlus is not supported on XP), or because they are using custom plugins and add-ons that aren’t supported yet with Office 365 ProPlus.
According to the latest information at FAQ regarding Office 2010 Subscription, for customers who got on the service prior to the new Office 365 service upgrade, the Office Professional Plus 2010 Subscription installation link will continue to be available in their portal until “late spring or early summer of 2014”. Customers will get notified via the Office 365 Message Center before the link is removed. For customers who need to keep using the installer after the link is removed, I would highly recommend downloading a copy of the installer as soon as possible.
Looking ahead, customers should also know that roughly 12-14 months after they were upgraded to the new Office 365, Microsoft will disable licensing for their Office 2010 Subscription installations. That means that users attempting to run Office 2010 Subscription after that time will see an in-product notice that their license has expired. They will continue to be able to use the product normally for as long as 30 days, but after that it will enter Reduced Functionality Mode. Just like above, customers will get notified via the Office 365 Message Center before their licensing is disabled. However, customers should be made aware of this fact as soon as possible so they can plan ahead appropriately for getting their users upgraded to Office 365 ProPlus.
