Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, on Windows Virtual PC

“Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego” is one of the great classic educational games.  It has been re-released and re-mastered many times – but it was originally released in 1985.

In this game – you take on the role of a detective who is hunting down the notorious thief “Carmen Sandiego” and the various members of her gang.  You do this by completing a number of missions, each of which follow this formula:

  • You are given the mission and informed that an item has been stolen
  • You travel the world looking for leads on where the culprit may have fled to next, and details about who the culprit could be.

You have one week of game time to track down the thief and obtain a warrant.  If you take too long, fail to obtain a warrant or obtain a warrant for the wrong person – the thief will get away.

I have fond memories of the fun involved in playing this game – and thankfully it runs perfectly under Virtual PC:

The original release of “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego” only supported monochrome or CGA (4 color) display.  When you play it under Virtual PC you will get the CGE experience.

One interesting historic point: because a portion of this game involved using random demographic information to determine the next country to visit (and because the Internet was around yet) this game originally shipped with a world almanac (i.e. a physical reference book).
