Item reservation on sales orders

Applies To: Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Feature Pack, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012

You can reserve in inventory all the items that you have selected on a sales order. If you reserve the items, this ensures that the items are available when the order is processed. You can reserve the items manually or automatically, and you select the preferred reservation method in the Reservation field in the Sales order form.

You can select from the following options:

  • Manual – No reservation of inventory is made unless you make reservations manually in the Reservation form.

  • Automatic – The order quantity is reserved from the item's available, on-hand inventory. If you use this method, you can reserve items that you have in stock for sales orders that will be delivered in the future. Before the order is delivered, you might have a second sales order that will be delivered before the first. You will receive a message that says there is not enough stock available for the second order.

  • Explosion – The reservation becomes part of the master planning so that master planning determines when the items are reserved. If dates or quantities change, master planning will suggest adjustments to orders.
