You’ve done a lot of research, and now you have a better understanding of the Microsoft commercial marketplace and the kinds of solutions that are offered to customers. You think that your company’s innovative applications are a great fit for either Azure Marketplace or Microsoft AppSource. Additionally, you believe that the millions of monthly active Microsoft users represent a substantial new sales opportunity for your company, which is exactly what your executive team was looking for.

Now that you know how customers can find your products in Microsoft AppSource and Azure Marketplace, you turn your attention to learning about the different ways that you can engage with customers once they discover your products.

Engage your customers

There are several ways that you can engage with your customers through the commercial marketplace. Once your offer is published in Microsoft AppSource or Azure Marketplace, you have the option to simply list your solution in the online store, offer a free trial, or enable easy customer purchases and deployments by making your offer transactable through Microsoft’s commerce system.

No matter how you choose to publish to the commercial marketplace, you'll be able to provide your product’s marketing materials and other content, like videos, to help customers discover your solution.

When you choose to fully invest in your commercial marketplace engagement by making your offers transactable, you’ll be able to take advantage of a flexible set of billing, packaging, and deployment options to fit you and your customers’ specific needs.

By default, your Microsoft AppSource and Azure Marketplace solutions are available to all customers, but you can also extend custom offers to individual customers privately by using private offer capabilities.

Regardless of the offer type you choose to publish, Microsoft will send you leads when potential customers interact with your commercial marketplace listing. When customers consent to share their information after clicking the buttons outlined below, leads are routed to your Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system.

Listing options

Listing options are used to define the ease at which a customer can find, try, buy, and deploy your solution online. There are four primary options, which are explained in detail below.

Listing (Contact Me)

A simple listing of your solution is the lowest level of engagement with potential customers and demonstrates the lowest level of investment into Microsoft’s commercial marketplace by your organization. When you list your solution in the marketplace, you can add a text description, product screenshots, supporting documents, and optional video content to your offer landing page.

Customers are encouraged to request outreach from your team through the “Contact Me” on your product’s marketplace landing page. When customers agree to provide account contact information, Microsoft sends that customer’s information to your organization for follow-up. This means that your potential customers are limited in their ability to assess your solution online without first committing to an interaction with someone from your company.

Free trial

A free trial of your solution provides an opportunity for enhanced engagement with your potential customers. When you offer a free trial in the commercial marketplace, you can add all the information associated with a “contact me” offer to help customers evaluate your solution.

When customers click the “Free Trial” button on your product’s landing page, they are routed to your website to initiate the trial for use. As a publisher, you define the website to which customers are routed and implement the trial within your own web solution.

Bring Your Own License (BYOL)

The Bring Your Own License (BYOL) functionality in Azure Marketplace allows customers to leverage investments in existing software subscriptions while deploying your software directly into their Azure account. These offerings are transacted outside of Microsoft’s commerce system, and publishers are responsible for validating the customer’s existing license. When you list your solution using BYOL, you can add a text description, product screenshots, supporting documents, and optional video content to your offer landing page.

When customers click the “Get It Now” button on your product’s landing page and agree to your terms of use and privacy policy, they’re routed to the Azure portal. Once there, customers are prompted to configure the solution before creating the resource and deploying it to their cloud subscription. As part of the configuration, your customer will enter an existing license key for your software to activate the solution.

BYOL listings are only made available to customers in Azure Marketplace.

Transact

A transact offer provides optimal customer engagement and enables the most complete discovery, evaluation, purchase, and implementation experience in the commercial marketplace.

When customers click the “Get It Now ” button on your product’s landing page and agree to your terms of use and privacy policy, they’re routed differently depending on the kind of product they’re purchasing. For all Azure Marketplace transact offers, customers are routed to the Azure portal to complete product configurations. For products purchased through Microsoft AppSource, the experience varies depending on the kind of product and the way that you configure your offer. Upon clicking “Get it now,” Microsoft also sends you lead information about the customer who has started to deploy your product.

Transact offers are billed against an existing Microsoft account or a credit card transaction. For offers that require the use of Azure infrastructure in a customer’s Azure account, the associated infrastructure/software costs appear on the customer’s consolidated Microsoft invoice. This simplified acquisition process is a significant benefit for customers, as they don’t need to manage a separate invoice from your company.
