Release notes for Current Channel

These release notes provide information about new features and non-security updates that are included in Current Channel updates for Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise, Microsoft 365 Apps for business, and the subscription versions of the desktop apps for Project and Visio.

  • Fixed an issue where extra entries appeared in the Excel Add-in list for some users.

Outlook

  • We fixed an issue where a retention policy for Skype for Business or Microsoft Teams was shown as the default folder policy when you view the properties of a mailbox folder, instead of the mailbox retention policy that's applied to the folder.

  • We fixed an issue that caused performance issues on ARM64 devices.

  • We fixed an issue that caused the translation options to be disabled for some users. Customers who experienced this bug would have seen their translation options disabled when navigating to File -> Options -> Language. Due to this, they would have been unable to change their preferred translation language and other translation related settings.

  • We fixed an issue that caused users of the Shared Calendar Improvements option who have many shared calendars to experience some performance issues.

PowerPoint

  • We fixed an issue where a user was unable to enter credentials into a Windows Security dialog to open a file, because of an obstructive PowerPoint-specific dialog.

Visio

  • SPO/ODB Links with guest access will now work.

Word

  • Fixed an issue to persist citations on a password protected docx file.

Office Suite

  • Fixed user switching data scenario when user switches between Active Directory Identities from the Me control in Office applications.

  • Anonymous users can present: When hosting a Teams live event, we added the ability for an anonymous users to join a Live Event and so that they can also present during the event.

  • Approvals - Reassign support: Approvers will now be able to delegate/reassign an approval request to another user.

  • Approval App add-in within Microsoft Word: Users will be able to create an approval request for an entire document or a section of a document within Microsoft Word via add-ins.

  • Together Mode for VDI: Together mode on VDI uses of AI segmentation technology in meetings to digitally place participants in a shared background, making it feel like you’re sitting in the same room with everyone else.

  • Supervised chat: Use Teams administrative policy to ensure students are supervised by an educator during private 1:1 or group chats. With Supervised Chat, students will not be allowed to engage in chats without a supervising educator present.

  • Microsoft Teams: Revised in-meeting Share experience: The user interface for the in-meeting Share feature in Microsoft Teams has been redesigned to help presenters find their desired content more quickly and easily.

  • Disable Camera for Specific Attendees: Meeting Organizers and Presenters can disable the cameras of specific Attendees in a Teams Meeting to make sure they don't share video in the meeting.

  • Disable Camera for All Attendees: Meeting Organizers and Presenters can disable the cameras of all Attendees in a Teams Meeting to make sure they don't share video in the meeting.

  • Teams webinar capabilities general availability: Schedule and deliver 1,000 person webinars with the same Teams app you use for meetings! Webinar capabilities support registration page creation, email confirmation for registrants, host management for attendee video and audio, attendee reporting, plus interactive features like polls, chat and reactions.

  • Create Teams with Team Templates: With Templates in Teams, users can choose from a variety of customizable templates when creating a new team, helping them get started quickly. IT Admins can also create custom templates for their organization, allowing them to standardize team structures, preinstall relevant apps, and scale best practices. IT Admins can choose which team templates to show to end users in Teams Admin Center, and also preconfigure website tabs by adding URLs to a website tab in a team template.

  • Present from PowerPoint to Teams: Present your slides directly from the PowerPoint app to a Teams meeting via PowerPoint Live.

  • Expanded Emoji Picker: The expanded emoji update offers people more fun and expressiveness in Teams. It also introduces a wider range of diversity and representation. The emoji set has expanded from 85 to over 800 emojis, with a category selector, skin tone selector and shortcode picker.

  • Chat with External Users in Group Chats: With this feature users can create group chats that include people external to their organization using Teams (requires all users to have external access capabilities enabled).

  • Update to Network planner tool for bandwidth estimation: Network planner tool will be updated to reflect the latest bandwidth requirements of Teams client. This will help IT administrators better estimate and plan their office bandwidth needs.

  • User preference setting to open files by default in Desktop (or) Browser (or) Teams: Users can set their default preference as Browser, Desktop or Teams when opening Office (Word, Excel, and Power Point) files that are shared in Teams.Desktop setting can be selected if latest Office clients are installed and activated

  • Spotlight multiple users at the same time in a meeting: Organizers and presenters can now spotlight multiple participants simultaneously during meetings. The meeting stage will show these spotlighted participants, with their videos or avatars, to everyone in the meeting.

Word

  • Fixed an issue where if you create a custom field formula which uses the ProjectDate*/ProjectDur* functions and if the second parameter is the Date(), Now() or Time() date and time functions, then a #ERROR results.

Word

  • Fixed an issue where canvas contextual cards for spelling and grammar show icon buttons, but those buttons have no tooltips.

  • Fixed an issue where the Editor Pane doesn't open.

Teams

  • Meeting Reactions: Meeting reactions are a new way to interact in meetings. Participants can send reactions and they'll be shown as a stream on content that is shared, and on the individual who sent the reaction if they're displayed on the meeting stage.

  • Improvement for managing attendee audio permissions in a Teams Meeting: Meeting presenters and organizers can now allow attendees to unmute even if their hand isn't raised. Previously, meeting attendees that were prevented from unmuting (mic disabled) had to raise their hand to be allowed to unmute.

  • Improvement for managing attendee audio permissions in a Teams Meeting: Previously, meeting presenters or organizers couldn't disable the mic of a single attendee in a meeting. The organizer or presenter could only set "Allow attendees to unmute" to off, thereby disabling the mics of every attendee. With this change, meeting presenters and organizers can prevent individual attendees from unmuting in an ad-hoc manner during a Teams Meeting.

  • Improved Experience in the Meeting Participant Roster: We are now changing how the participant list is displayed in a Teams meeting for the Lobby, In meeting, Presenters, and Attendees participant sections. A maximum of 20 participants for each of the sections will be displayed in the initial view, with an option to drill in and view more participants within that section. For the lobby, you can review the full list before you admit all into the meeting. The roster will display details of most active participants in the meeting arranged in alphabetical order. There are no changes to the participants action menu.

  • Search meeting participants from the roster: From the search box in the roster, users can now search currently in the meeting participants, to know whether a particular individual has joined the meeting. They can continue to search for participants outside the meeting and request them to join the meeting.

  • Share to Teams from Outlook: Share to Teams from Outlook allows you to send a copy of email messages or conversations, including attachments, into Teams chats and channels. Find the Share to Teams option in the Outlook ribbon or the action menu for an email. Share to Teams supports Outlook on the web, Outlook for Windows, and the new Outlook for Mac Preview.

  • Breakout Room Timer and Room assignment retention: Organizers can now set a timer for Breakout rooms from the Breakout Room settings. After timer has expired, rooms will automatically close and participants will come back to the main meeting. Room assignment retention provides the ability to persist room configuration and assignment over multiple sessions.With participant reassignment capability, organizer will now be able to move joined participants across rooms and main meeting also when rooms are opened.

  • Offline access for files: Users can now access previously opened files even when there is no internet connectivity.

  • Grid View when sharing a PowerPoint File: When sharing a PowerPoint file in a meeting, users can now use grid view to see all the slides in the deck for easy ad-hoc slide navigation.

Word

  • Draft documents with your voice: Use the new dictation toolbar, voice commands and auto-punctuation to draft documents.

  • Updated Contacts list view: Contacts list now shows email addresses and updated photo and text size.

  • Break the language barrier with a built-in translator: Add-ins for translation aren't required anymore! You can now use the Intelligent Translator in Outlook. When you receive a message in another language, a prompt will appear on top of the message asking if you’d like Outlook to translate it to your default language. You can also right-click to translate specific words, phrases, or the whole message. Learn more

PowerPoint

  • Require users to apply sensitivity labels: Users will be prompted to apply a sensitivity label if their organization's policy requires it.

Teams

  • Presenter View when sharing a PowerPoint file: When sharing a PowerPoint file in a meeting, the presenter can now a thumbnail strip of all the slides in the deck for easy ad-hoc slide navigation.

  • Theming and icon updates: We have made updates to the default and dark theme colors and to the icon.

  • Live Event Presenter Support on iPad: You can present in a live event from your supported iPad device.

  • Poll meeting participants using Microsoft Forms: Polls for Teams meetings is an easily discoverable and seamless experience that will help you conduct more engaging and productive meetings. With Polls, which is powered by Microsoft Forms, meeting presenters can prepare, launch, and evaluate polls before, during, and after meetings, respectively, all from one place under a tab in the Teams meeting. As a meeting presenter, you can add the Forms app as a tab in the Teams meeting, then create, launch, and evaluate your polls from one place. Create polls to be launched during the meeting even before the meeting begins. Then, after the meeting, you can choose to evaluate responses in the tab, an exported Excel workbook, or on the web in the Forms app. Presenters have a variety of controls, like enabling anonymous responses, closing polls, and exporting results to Excel. Attendees from any endpoint (mobile, web, desktop) can view and answer polls as they appear on the meeting screen or in the meeting chat, as well as see non-anonymous poll results in real time.

  • Meeting reactions: Meeting reactions are a new way to interact in meetings. Participants can send reactions and they'll be shown as a stream on content that is shared, and on the individual who sent the reaction if they're displayed on the meeting stage.

  • History Menu for desktop client: The History Menu in Teams desktop client lets you easily get back to recently visited locations. Simply hover over the forward or backward navigation options in the desktop client and select the location. A keyboard shortcut is also available to open the menu.

  • Cortana in Microsoft Teams Rooms for US: Cortana voice assistance in Microsoft Teams Rooms lets you have a touchless experience for calling a number from your conference room, joining or ending a meeting, or adding a number to a meeting.

  • Masking phone numbers: We released a new admin setting for masking phone numbers for dial-in participants when they join a meeting. Admins can choose to mask phone numbers from everyone in the meeting (except the organizer), from external people only or have masking disabled. If the admins choose to have this setting disabled, the phone numbers will be displayed fully in the meeting. (private release until the end of October)

  • Calendar sharing: We added the ability to add a channel to a calendar tab.

  • Bringing more scenes to Together Mode: Teams have now introduced the ability for meeting organisers or presenters to change the Together Mode scene allowing attendees to appear in different experiences together.
