Release notes for Semi-Annual Channel releases in 2018

These release notes provide information about new features, security updates, and non-security updates that are included in Semi-Annual Channel updates to Office 365 ProPlus in 2018.

Excel: Feature updates

  • “Add Column from Examples” enhancements: Supports more Date/Time, Math, and Index Column transformations.
  • Performance improvements: Excel opens complex workbooks with multiple sheets faster, so you can crunch formulas with large ranges, filter lots of rows, or copy and paste quicker.
  • Insert online pictures: New landing page for selecting images and attribution information is automatically inserted with the image.
  • Azure Data Lake Store connector: Users can now import data from Azure Data Lake Store.
  • "Add column from Examples" enhancements: Supports suggestions, more Date/Time operations, and additional transformations.
  • Data tab: Ribbon buttons on the Data tab have been rearranged into two new groups: Get & Transform Data and Queries & Connections.
  • Share queries: Export any query definition into an Office Database Connection (ODC) file, and then share it across workbooks or with others.
  • Load data: Load data from a query directly into PivotTables or PivotCharts without having to save the data into the Data Model.
  • Shared file activity: Choose the Activity button in the upper right corner of the file to see when a file shared in OneDrive for Business or SharePoint was shared, edited, renamed, or restored.
  • Safe links: When a user clicks on a link, Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) inspects the link to see if it’s malicious. If the link is deemed malicious, the user is redirected to a warning page instead of the original target URL. More information
  • Enhanced data import functionality: Easily import and shape data from various sources. Manage workbook queries and connections with the Queries & Connection side pane, and share queries with others via ODC files. More information
  • Changes in shared files: View who has made changes in shared workbooks, and restore earlier versions. More information
  • Lasso Select with a pen button: Use supported digital pen buttons to Lasso Select ink without visiting the ribbon.

  • Fix an issue where the programmatic creation of a PivotTable followed by a programmatic refresh causes Excel to crash.
  • Fix an issue where the user incorrectly sees a "catastrophic failure" error message when opening an Office 2007 or older workbook (.xls or .xla) with macros.
  • Fix an issue where opening a workbook from the command line might result in the loss of rich text formatting in a cell.
  • Fix an issue where the user can't close a workbook in protected view when the file name contains square brackets.
  • Fix an issue where, when the user tries to insert an object in an existing workbook, Excel crashes when the user clicks Browse.
  • Fix an issue where selecting "Resize shape to fix text" (in the Text Options/Text Box portion of the Format Shape pane) results in no change to the shape.
  • Fix an issue where, when opening a workbook by double-clicking on it, the cell text fonts and formats don't get loaded or two identical workbooks are opened for a single template.
  • Fix an issue where the first workbook created when Excel starts won't close when a new workbook is opened or created.
  • Fix an issue where placement of the tooltip is misaligned when dragging or drag filling.
  • Fix an issue where, when saving a workbook by using File > Save As, a file name that contains periods appears blank or truncated in the file save dialog.
  • Fix an issue where, when saving a sync-backed file, Office fails to write to disk, but Office keeps uploading the file to OneDrive. With this fix, user will now see an error message and the upload won't proceed.
  • Fix an issue with rendering where black lines and headers appear due to a faulty graphics driver.
  • Fix an issue where Excel crashes or is unable to save the workbook after a chart is inserted.
  • Fix an issue where the page break line in page break preview is incorrectly positioned.
  • Fix an issue where Excel crashes when opening an .XLL file.
  • Fix an issue where the pattern style of a cell doesn’t render correctly after adding a header or footer in Page Layout view.
  • Fix an issue where pasting a copy of a PivotTable into another workbook could result in a crash.
  • Fix an issue where, when you choose the Replace command and the Find and Replace dialog box opens, the focus of the dialog box is on the Find tab instead of the Replace tab.
  • Fix an issue where Excel crashes when opening the Activity pane for a workbook opened from a SharePoint server older than SharePoint Server 2016.
  • Fix an issue where Excel opens and displays a blank window when one or more XLL add-ins are enabled.
  • Fix an issue where Excel crashes after having used the Forms button in an already closed workbook.
  • Fix an issue where, when using the SheetBeforeRightClick event, inserting a column that intersects merged cells doesn't expand the merged cells.
  • Fix an issue where Excel temporarily hangs when you expand or collapse a PivotTable and the PivotTable headers move off the screen.
  • Fix an issue where tabs are ignored when copying and pasting tab delimited text from Word, resulting in the text not being parsed into columns.
  • Fix an issue where Excel crashes when opening the Publish as Web Page dialog box.
  • Fix an issue where a data refresh doesn't succeed or Excel crashes when using data from a SQL Server Analysis Services server, and the locale of Excel and the locale of the SQL Server Analysis Services server differ.
  • Fix an issue where errors appear when trying to save changes to documents synchronized with the OneDrive client.
  • Fix an issue where changes can't be made anywhere in a worksheet when there is a PivotTable with fields in the Filter area, but no fields anywhere else.

Outlook: Feature updates

  • Accessibility improvements: We've made it easier to read and edit text, tables, lists, and images in email when you're using a screen reader.
  • New account configuration: Set up new accounts with a new wizard that requires fewer manual steps.
  • Attach dialog for links: When attaching a link using Attach File on the ribbon, you can select whether to add it as a link or as an attachment. If you don’t want to see this dialog each time, go to File > Options > General and specify how you want links to be attached under “Attachment options.”
  • Support for on-premises attachments: Files from on-premises SharePoint Server show up as recent files under Message > Attach File, on-premises OneDrive for Business and SharePoint team sites appear under Attach File > Browse Web Locations, and local files can be uploaded to on-premises OneDrive for Business sites.
  • Business classifications for groups:  A business classification level defined by the tenant admin, such as Confidential, can be assigned when creating or editing a group, and that classification appears in the group header.
  • Guest access to Office 365 groups: Collaborate with people outside the organization by granting them access to group conversations, files, calendar invitations, and the group notebook. More information
  • Actionable messages: Developers can create messages to make it easy for users to take simple or quick actions right from Outlook without having to switch to an external web site or separate app. More information

PowerPoint: Feature updates

  • Insert online pictures: New landing page for selecting images and attribution information is automatically inserted with the image.
  • Closed captions for videos: Add closed captions to a video to make it more accessible. More information
  • Narrate a recording: Include video of yourself narrating when you make a recording of a presentation. Recordings can include animations, ink, audio, and video.
  • Shared file activity: Choose the Activity button in the upper right corner of the file to see when a file shared in OneDrive for Business or SharePoint was shared, edited, renamed, or restored.
  • Alt text creation: A cloud-based service automatically generates alternative text for pictures in a presentation.
  • Safe links: When a user clicks on a link, Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) inspects the link to see if it’s malicious. If the link is deemed malicious, the user is redirected to a warning page instead of the original target URL. More information
  • Designer improvements: Recommends professional design ideas for action-oriented lists.
  • Changes in shared files: View who has made changes in shared presentations, and restore earlier versions. More information

PowerPoint: Security updates

PowerPoint: Non-security updates

  • Fix an issue where, when saving a sync-backed file, Office fails to write to disk, but Office keeps uploading the file to OneDrive. With this fix, user will now see an error message and the upload won't proceed.
  • Fix an issue where editing and formatting text after an undo in a table causes PowerPoint to crash.
  • Fix an issue where references to Flash Player based YouTube embed codes result in a new window opening to play the video. Old embed codes are now upgraded to reference HTML5 based YouTube videos so that they correctly play in place.
  • Fix an issue where PowerPoint crashes when opening a presentation from a SharePoint server older than SharePoint Server 2016.
  • Fix an issue where end-user defined characters (EUDCs) that are linked to fonts fail to display.

Project: Non-security updates

  • Fix an issue an issue where project level custom field data can get lost on save.

  • Fix sign-in failures for users migrated from on-premises to online due to firewall rules.
  • Add a new DWORD registry key to fix an issue where, when a user signs into the client on an external network performing LyncAutoD, the client resets the OAuthUsed registry key to false. To fix the issue, set the value to 1 for EnableRestoreOAuthUsedKeyWhenUsingCachedWebTicket under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Lync\<SipID>.

Visio: Feature updates

  • Fix an issue where Word crashes when a user tries to do a Save As to an existing document on OneDrive for Business and then cancels the save or tries to merge existing changes.
  • Fix an issue where, when saving a sync-backed file, Office fails to write to disk, but Office keeps uploading the file to OneDrive. With this fix, user will now see an error message and the upload won't proceed.
  • Fix an issue where Word can hang if the user navigates to the Insert tab shortly after opening Word.
  • Fix an issue where, after clicking the margin, characters are displayed in the upper left of the screen when entering characters.
  • Fix an issue where Word crashes when opening the Activity pane for a document opened from a SharePoint server older than SharePoint Server 2016.
  • Fix an issue where Word closes unexpectedly while loading the Grammarly add-in.
  • Fix an issue where, under certain conditions, Word crashes while trying to recover cloud-based files.
  • Fix an issue where shapes within drawing canvas can't be rotated.
  • Fix an issue where, when typing in Korean, consonants and vowels are incorrectly separated.

  • Add support for single sign-on (SSO) for domain users for Office 365 Germany plans where the identity is federated with an on-premises Active Directory.
  • Add functionality to prevent minors from acquiring and activating Office Add-ins that come from the Office Store.
  • Fix an issue with zooming and scaling in Office Add-ins under dynamic DPI environment.
  • Fix an issue where the CurrentStatus node of the Office configuration service provider (CSP) returns an empty string even if Office 365 ProPlus is currently installed.
  • Fix an issue that causes .box file format changes, which impacts functionality of older versions of Office installed on the same computer, because .box files are shared across all versions of an Office app on the same computer.
  • Fix an issue where, under certain circumstances when using shared computer activation, an error message appears saying that the app has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly and asking if the user wants to run a repair.
  • Fix an issue where Online Repair progress isn't shown to the user.
  • Fix an issue where Office file properties aren't displayed in File Explorer.
  • Fix an issue where Office add-in buttons disappear from the ribbon when there is a second document opened.
  • Fix an issue where some VBA modules which have names with double-byte characters can't be opened.

  • Fix an issue where clicking on the Draw tab causes the application to crash for some users.
  • Fix an issue where hovering over a Common Control that has a tooltip on it causes the application to crash.

  • Fix an issue with how some program files are signed, causing anti-virus programs to flag those files as well as problems protecting or accessing data under Windows Information Protection (WIP).
